My Ride Needing A Makeover

Firstly Merry Christmas to all hope you have all had a good one.With the unseasonably warm weather[:0] we are having in Yorkshire at the moment, Clarabel was taken out of her winter storage to join around 70 Vintage vehicles and tractors in the local run to raise money for the air ambulance.

She behaved perfectly and it was great to get out in her in the so called Winter.:) Highlight of the day was having to overtake a VW camper that had conked out halfway up a hill. Good day and hopefully a fair few quid was raised.;)

Clarabel and co have just woken up after a long winter -following summer in December! Just polished Clarabel and we are about to set off for a classic meet at The National Memorial Arboretum on Sunday(Croxall Road Alrewas Staffs DE13 7AR www.thenma.org.uk) We went last year -pictures pg 20- Hope for another good day- blazing hot year last- Hope summers come!

Good to see your news- Wave if you see us on the M62/M1 or A38. Will post picies later.

It's our first trip out in Harvey on Sunday, a liesurely roadrun with the local car club, a good test after the engine re-build:)

Just got back safely from 'Drive it Day' at the National Memorial Arboretum -More than a bit damp! Journey back was trouble free -127 miles of faultless purring at about 60 ish which is nothing like the trip down!:
Started off about 3 ish Friday -stopped off and started once ,then called in to buy some bread -big mistake ,wouldn't start again -suspected inaccurate fuel gauge and put in a spare gallon -still no result -waited until Matt came back from work with another gallon - started first time at 5 pm. Off to Petrol station for £59.00 of unleaded (including 2 spare galls). Wouldn't start again -pushed off fourcourt- suspected vapour lock -went for a walk and eventually set off at 7.00 after it had cooled down. Steady 60 all the way down M62/M1 -temp gauge right in the middle of the white -things going well until main Derby island on the A38 -stalled suddenly halfway accross first lane with Lorries everywhere from the back and side! No response to starting again- Very difficult situation in the dark and wet at 9PM. Other good motorist took pity and quite literally circled me like a wagon train -six cars stopped and about 20 people deployed to flag down danger as it approached.
Amazing response resulting in a blue transit man hitching up a tow rope and dragging me out of the way - during this grabbed my glasses and a torch and typed in security code -slipped the clutch and was running again. Arrived at destination in Lichfield after much revving at traffic lights at 10pm. Next days investigation showed no spark (much better than no fuel)Attacked the dizzy with a screwdriver as points were completely shut! Borrowed some feeler gauges and set up gap-Started first time and purred thereafter. Moral to this tale -Set points every 1000 miles or so- I think the Chineese plastic on the cam followers is recycled rubbish and wears down quickly -the old points in the 1970's-80's used to do about 5-10K and the only reason you touched them was to grind down the pitting. Hopefuly Clarabel is now set for the summer(when it comes)> Hazel Matt Thomas and Evie May decided to drive down by car and (thank goodness) missed the fun. They hope to put some piccies up later tonight -Including hopefully one of a beer bottle waggon- amazing!

glad you all got back problem free. and its good to know a few people will still stop to help each other out. think your right about the points too, recycled is rubbish lol

Fitting an electronic ignition (and carrying the points as spares backup) is one of the best moves you can do for reliability :)

Thanks for advice- The blown up coils blew up the brand new electronic ignition -so went back to things I could fix with my old tool box. Might go back to electronic when Ive sorted out the fridge blowing up the coils!!
 
Im probably teaching granny to suck eggs but you have lubricated the dizzy shaft have`nt you?;)
If its dry the points will close up very quickly as the plastic wears down. A little bit of grease or even oil on the shaft will stop the plastic wearing, dont over do it though or you will get oil or grease on the face of the points and then no spark!
 
Thanks for tip -I've already got a felt pad on a clip inside the dizzy just for this purpose - We didn't have these in the 1970's just a small lozzenge of grease with every new set of points!
 
Some dizzys did have them and some did`nt back in the 70`s....but how do you know they did`nt? according to your profile your 24! you were`nt around!:D:D:D
