Hi All,

Todays questions are:

1) There is a connection on the bottom of the carburettor that goes to the vacuum advance - what does it do, and what would happen to the engine if it is not connected?

2) I have fitted a new flasher relay to the indicator/hazard circuit. It works fine for a while and then stops. If then left alone, after a few minutes it does the same thing again - works a bit then stops. I think there must be a capacitor that is not discharging. Currently I have the three terminals as +ve, indicator lights, and dash warning. I was thinking of putting the lights and dash light on the same terminal, and connecting the third straight to earth - which is what was shown on the diagram I could find, but is different to how the original was wired. Does that make sense?

1. As I understand it: To run properly your engine needs to advance the timing slightly when under full load, if the timing was left set at one position it wouldn't run too well. So, when under load the vaccum in the inlet manifold increases which 'sucks' on that pipe going to the dizzy. This suction pulls on the points inside the dizzy advancing the timing thus maintaining a smooth running engine.

In fact if you removed the dizzy cap and observe the points while sucking on the carb end of the pipe you should see some movement.

Wow! I connected a new bit of tube this evening, and when I fired him up, he sounded like a different van! Skate and I stared at each other in amazment!
Just to make sure I wasn't dreaming I disconnected the pipe and he immediately stalled!
God knows how long the pipe has been missing - probably since we bought him. I'm wondering how much effect this will have on the other issues, oil leaks and smoke from the breather! Poor frodo, all this time he's been chugging away
