Moley and Brian the Snail

Well what an interesting few weeks I've had with Brian, we decided to respray the wheels after we replaced the crossplys with radials as there was no paint where the old balance weights had been:(. So I went down to the local motor factures and got two tins mixed to match the paint, used the spare as the test wheel to check all was ok - which it was, so nipped down to the local tyre bay and got them to take all four wheels off and leave Brian on axle stands over the weekend while we resprayed all the wheels. Disaster,[V][V][V] the paint reacted with the original paint so we spent two days flatting wheels and ended up hand painting the wheels so that they would be ready to go back on first thing Monday.

(Draws breath)

The local tyre bay put the four wheels back on for me having added the 15" Atlas white wall rims to them :):):) they looked good.

Brian wouldn't start so I couldn't move him out of the tyre bay, the starter solenoid had packed up [V][V][V] managed to start him by using the button on the starter solenoid, and then mad panic to get a new starter solenoid so that I could get him to the NEC for the classic car show.

When I got to the NEC discovered that Brian had got hungry and eaten the whitewalls on the way [:(!][:(!][:(!] so had to jack him up again and remove what was left of the whitewalls.

Had a brilliant time at the NEC spoke to loads of people who loved Commers, then time to go home and guess what, Brain wouldn't start[V][V][V] my fault, I had had the lights on in the back running off the leisure battery and didn't realise it would drain the main battery as well. So we bump started him and off I went heading home.:D......... until I realised that I didn't have enough fuel :D:D:D so I did the only thing possible and called in at the motorway services, fuelled up and then called the AA as Brian's battery was still flat :(:(:( got the nice man from the AA to disconnect the leisure battery so that only the main battery was taking charge, jumped started and off I went again for home:I when I got home turned him off and thought I'd just check that the battery had charged up....nothing, dead as a dodo, checked the battery and hey presto the nice AA man had never put the lead back on the battery so I'd run all the way home on the alternator[)][)]

And I still love my Commer.... lots:D:D:D

Phew that was a long update

Sorry, it's not funny at all but I couldn't help chuckle a little bit at the AA man bit:)

Those Atlas whitwalls are a bit of a pain aren't they!

I fitted some to my Rover P6 and they looked amazing, but were a real hassle to get them on straight in the first place. If ever you get them again, a top tip is to liberally coat with vasalene inbetween them and the tyre to reduce heat friction (you already knew that didn't you lol)

Nice to hear from you and Brian looked well cool at the NEC:D

I'd be upset if it wasn't so funny, you now what it's like, you think oh well nothing else can go wrong....:I:I

I've had the same whitewalls on the Minx for 10 years with no problems (and yes we use lubricant :I:I) but I think it's the extra weight of Brian that caused the problem (either that or the fact that I was doing 90mph on the M69 on the way to the NEC ;);)

i guess you have to laugh or you would cry........bet you wouldn't change a minute of it all tho!

what an adventure[8D] That's what outsiders don't seem to get! you came home with a story to tell .....that is what it's all about!

My sister in law doesn't get it! she saw the 'benefits' of Smurf and went all modern with a new vw van and has spent a fortune turning it into a 'day' van......has she a story to tell??

NO ladies & gents she has not........YAWN!!

Perseverance is the word, with out it we would give up. That must be the first time Brian has spat his dummy out with you - serves you right for painting his wheels;)

Even the best ones out there are allowed to have their hissy fits! I wonder what went wrong with the white walls? I wouldn't have thought it was the weight of your conversion. They may have possibly been off centre or from old stock and had got brittle? Good to hear you lube up though ;)

Dear, what a catalogue og bad luck, Debs. Sorry to hear that.

Must admit that the 90mph was the greatest shock of the all, though! [:0]

Hiya Debs. Sounds like you've been having a bit of an adventure recently[^] Glad you enjoyed yourselves at the NEC.

I was reading some of the old posts and saw the picture of your awning. You don't know what the make and name of the model are do you[?] Me and Claire have been looking for one that would fit Pootle, and yours looks perfect:p

Hope you and Brian are well

Hi Matt, I've had a look and the awning is a Sunncamp Auton, I got it from Brownhills at Newark it was about £120 I think. It's really lightweight under 10kg, I found this link if you're interested in one

Looks like the sort of thing I'll be after for Peggy.

If I told you I was a pathological liar, would you believe me?
I've got a Highwayman!!!

Cheers Debs.

I like the look of your awning. Lightweight, and not so large so as to detract from the look of the van.

I just need to find somewhere that has one in stock. Not that there's really a hurry. As you have done with Brian, we've had to wrap Pootle up for the winter. I will be taking a flask of tea out to her this weekend and just having a sit. Still, lots of jobs to do over the next few months. Need to make new curtains, seat covers etc.

Big thanks to Trev - Daytona, have received through the post a lovely template for making an internal cover for the front of Brian under the dash (hopefully will keep my legs a bit warmer). So that's a nice winter project whilst he's tucked up.

Just playing catch up on all the threads as we've been away since the 5th Dec celebrating Dave's 50th birthday with a cruise round the Carribbean islands of Haiti, Grand Kaymen, Jamacia and Cozumel [8D][8D][8D](really nice, not our usual sort of holiday, bit of a treat for such a big birthday and I've still got sea legs wobbling all over the place) bit of a shock to the system landing in Heathrow at 1 degrees after leaving Miami at 30 degrees. Didn't spot any Commers at all[V] plenty of VW's in Cozumel Mexico
