Meet Ted

Ah, I am getting confused with the 295 head :I

You want as big a rad as possible on an exhaust valve to help outward flow and avoid any sharp area likely to cause pre-ignition.

No, i would say the rocker cover adds at least 75 bhp ;)

I did exactly the same mod as this a few years ago, made it go better but the economy and torque were never as good as standard. I came to the conclusion that I needed to put on a bigger carb 1 and 1/2 or 3/4 from a metro etc and have the needle set up on a rolling road. In the end the engine wore out and I rebuilt another one with a standard set up. I will be really interested to see how you get on.

As it is, with the HS4 (1 1/2"), it does feel it has more torque, pulling from about 40 in top feels more rapid and it keeps going, but as I said I think it needs a richer jet to get the best out of it. Fitted the Mini air filter box and did the seventies 'tuning' trick of cutting a series of 1" holes around the outside - much quieter now, has a nice growl instead of the roar of the K&N[8D]

You know I said I would need a new exhaust soon, well the coke can repair didn't last as long as I hoped:I

So now I have a whopping 1 1/2" bore 'performance' system from one of the Minor specialist suppliers:) Unfortunately it's meant to mate with a Marina 1275 manifold (which is bigger) so I had to mod the end of the down pipe a bit.

First I hack sawed around the large sleeve and dressed the weld down.

Then flared the end out to suit the manifold

Unfortunately I had to botch the hole were the exhaust exits the engine bay, but the tab is bent back so it can be tapped back and welded up at some point.

While I was at it I fitted a richer needle to the carb and took him for a blast - I can report that the new exhaust and needle have made a big improvement and he fair whizzes along now:D

Thanks to you wonderful people we sorted out the tacho problem[^] So now where is it going?

I cut a plate to mount it and a few other gauges.

Then painted it body colour and fitted it behind the drivers side glove box trim.

I never liked the gaping hole that was there before, it got filled with all sorts of crap but now it has a proper use[^] Just need to fit it and wire everything up now.

Just need to paint the tacho needle to match the others.

I tried to get the bezel off to do just that but without using a screw driver to prise it off it wont budge and I don't want to damage it:I

New gauges fitted and working, slight delay caused by the need for an adaptor for the temperature bulb on the water gauge and me kinking the oil pressure gauge tube[8)] It was very flimsy plastic tube so I decided to replace it with copper instead:)

I've tidied it up a bit since[8)]
