Leaking roof

I have a Haylett Olympian commer, with a pop up roof and I seem to be experiencing some leaks!!! I appreciate that you can purchase new rubbers for the roof, but I think that the roof itself has been mended, fixed, mended so many times that the fibreglass (or what ever it is made of) is sadly in need to a major overhaul. I cannot be the only one who has had this issue. There are plenty of firms who make replacement eerrmm vw roof's, but as this is a different size, then they cannot assist. Is anyone breaking an olympian or had theirs mended or can just offer any advice as I am running out of buckets!!! Assuming I get that far, has anyone tried to take their canvas off of the metal lify system and how much of a pain was that?

Crikey you do seem to be suffering from a host of leaky stuff. I'm not familiar with the Haylett roof but the canvass shouldn't be that difficult to replace. The fibre glass roof may be a bit trickier to get right - is is really bad? Apart from having the shear luck of finding a good replacement maybe you could try someone like a boat builders or simply try typing in 'fibre glass repairs' into Yell.com - you never know what might turn up. Sorry I can't be of more help.

Boats, hmm, not thought of that!! Everything seems to leak, windows, roof and my foot gets wet when I drive in the rain!!! classic. still, when she is sorted she will be fab. I think its fibreglass and its a right mess from what I can see!! Thanks for the thought.

may be worth investigating doing a mould perhaps some one arty might be able to do it cheaper.goog le perhaps has answers.if all else fails have an ali roof fabricated to match [8D]

I have a local boat builders that do my fibreglass Commer panels. They can take a mould off the original and make a new one, not a cheap thing to do though.

yet another thing the commer seems to be famous for, leaks... Smurf side windows are leaking again, so will have to seal up, again!!!!

Hi

I have an olympian and if your roof is too knackered you could possibly make a mould from mine. It does need to be removed for repair to the canvas as some point (Removal looks like an easy job). The difficulty is storage of the roofless van. Cant imagine how it would become so irrepairable.

There was also another olympian sold recently and if I remeber the Roof looked quite good. Perhaps this is nearer to you.

My windscreen leaked and I was recommended captain tolleys creaping crack cure - This solved the windscreen leak (I think).

In the middle of the cab there is a vent lever, make sure this is shut.

Inspect the side windows, and keep your eye out for and vertical holes in the bottom of the double u channel (These may be hidden below a plastic U channel. Make sure the drain holes in the side windows are free to release water back to outside.

Make sure the front door water seals work properly (Weatherstrips), if not Martin can supply these and there quite easy to fit once you get used to taking the door to bits. Remove the plastic bungs from the bottom of the doors so water can drain away if it does get in.

Hope this helps, the above are the leaks i've found on Skye and i'm sure there are many other ways for warer to get in.

The water could be coming from the heater box, the flap Andy mentioned is the fresh air feed to the heater but unfortunately the drain from the heater box gets blocked and the bottom of the heater box rots out - you may have heard us advising people to squeeze their bulbous end:I....this is the heater box drain, you can see it hanging down behind the front grille of the van.

it's got a split in the end when you sueeze it it opens allowing water out god only knows how you are meant to reach it though :Dmen may have a better idea :I

Madge, my 1967 Singer Vogue, has just such a bulb and I often give it a squeeze from time to time.

Being a '67 Madge is the Arrows (Hunter) shape. Paint is very badly faded but body mostly solid. Off the road at the moment awaiting engine re-build and a few other things.
