I have added an overdrive to my Spit and I have ben told a relay is not necessary with a J type od. I have a 1500 and a single rail trans with the od to my early Spitfire. Thank you for your valued help.

I don’t think have ever seen a wiring diagram for an overdrive on a Commer PB. There may be one you can adapt form a Triumph or other D Type fitted period vehicle.
I fitted a D Type overdrive with a relay via a gearbox inhibitor switch on reverse gear so it won’t engage in reverse but will work on all forward gears. Just needs an on/off switch on the dash somewhere to operate it. Plus I added a tell tale light.
See if any of these will do the trick. Are you using a relay or wiring the live feed direct to the solenoid?
Ignore the wiring colours it is not not Commer wiring.
