gearboxes/overdrives

not sure but no I don't think so, as I understand it the job of the inhibitor is to stop you accidently using the o/drive in 1, 2, and reverse....just make sure you switch the o/drive off inbetween gear changes and def off in reverse

Just as a test, it means you will be able to select OD in any gear so I wouldn't advise to run like that:I

Sorry, but what would that test? I know the solenoid works when i put a direct supply to it... and i have already adjusted it in accordance with your scanned in workshop manual, so is good to go... if i can get the supply to it when selected!?!?!?:p

Of course it would help if i didn't live in the arse-end of nowhere and could hook up with one of you guys for a bit of practical help!?

That said, I wouldn't live anywhere else.... the summer traffic will soon be here....!!

This is starting to do my bloody head in!?!?

Although i have noticed something on the wiring diagrams...on the conversion sheet for the relay from Speedies, it says...

W2 is 86
W1 is 85
C2 is 30
C3 is 87a
C1 is 87

And on the wiring diagram from Panky/Martin there is a C4 (but no C3!?!?) so have assumed (always risky) that C3 is C4?? - If that makes sense!?? Anyway, off to church shortly to seek some 'divine inspiration!?!?'

Will have another go later.

It would tell you if you had a duff inhibitor switch but by the sound of it the problem is elsewhwere. Bigmonkeyman had trouble with a Speedies relay and eventually gave up on it (I think) and used and old second hand one. I bought an old R6 off ebay and couldn't get it to work so ended up converting to a none self cancelling circuit using a relay on the on/off switch wire. Took a little bit of fiddling but it works.

Not sure what my options are now...?
Have double/triple checked all the wiring.... the relay will not
give me power down to the solenoid - which definitely works - so annoying!

So either the relay is not working or the dash switch is not working?????

Q.How do you test the switch? - By the way, is it s'pose to click and then automatically flick back to the central position?

Q.Can i buy any 5 pin relay to replace the one i have???

Thanks guys

just a thought Ray....the relay must be earthed to the body by means of the bolt that secures it, you have to scrape a bit of paint away to ensure a decent earth...

Try holding the gear lever firmly back in 4th, ignition on and switch on the o/d. Peggy's won't work unless I do this, either the linkage needs adjusting or the inhibitor switch is worn/faulty.

The o'd switch is supposed to spring back to a 'middle' position. To dis-engage it you flick the switch the other way (on Peggy down is on and up is off).

Peggy's been camping!

If I told you I was a pathological liar, would you believe me?

Tried to earth relay Colin... still the same?? However not sure that makes a difference?? have other working relays fixed to wood??

Anyway have made some(?) progress... the relay now makes a continous 'beep' noise when i put a test screwdriver to the solenoid supply connector... but the tester bulb does not light up...

AND the test screwdriver bulb glows (weakly) when i flick the o/d switch... assume it needs to sustain power to the overdrive solenoid the whole time the o/d is engaged??

This is all while in 4th... feel like i am quite close, but maybe not. The inhibitor is brand new, so can't be that.???

To say this is getting on my t@ts would be obvious!!!

my relay makes a continuous beep only if 1st or 2nd is selected with the o'drive switched on,and it then won't send power to the solonoid, it's a warning! so sounds like it could be the inhibitor? have you still got the old inhibitor that you could swap over to try it?

reason i asked is because i come to Plymouth on tuesdays ( or at least i will for the next couple of weeks) Might be able to pop in if you think that would be of some use? depends if you can be around in the day time....i'm no expert mind!

Ok... well that's more info, will run through it all again tomorrow!!! - had enough today.

The inhibitor is new from Speedies.. I had thought of putting the old one back in, but the internal end of the switch plunger is badly worn (assume from use?) and is also stuck solid. The new one would push in and spring out with your finger.

One thing i did notice on the inside of the top cover plate assembly to the gearbox, is that the metal castings inside,(which moves about when select a gear)in particularly the part which will connect with the inhibitor plunger was very worn also.... although would that explain why it won't allow power to the solenoid??? (Not sure anyone will follow that??? - just thinking out loud!? lol)

Thanks for the kind offer Colin... wouldn't want to drag you down here though.

As you know, I have just fitted the o/d box, so I still have the old box, and the top cover plate with the gear selector linkages inside. This one is not worn on the same place as it was not an o/d box... so no inhibitor to contact with...?

Maybe if i swap these around too?? it will take and hour or 2 mind????!!!! - bloody hell![xx(]

Your'e right i didn't follow that LOL...i was lucky and didn't have to swap my inhibitor so I didn't see what your'e on about:D

i bet you are p'd off mate, i know i would be too..

have you driven the van at all since you put the box in? do you have any difficulty selecting gears? when you think you are selecting 4th are you positive its actually going into 4th? and not 2nd?

I did drive it to the beach and back the other day... and it didn't work. May just double check it all tomorrow AM and go for a spin anyway........see what happens.

Sorry to bore the hell out of everyone!?!? - it is funny though!!lol

ZZzzzz....ZZZzzzZZZzzz...ahem! sorry dozed off then:D[}:)]:D

just hurry up and get it sorted..then we can move onto the next problem lol

Not boring at all -just wish I could give some advice that works:I This is the kid of problem that will be sorted with a eureka (not Ulrika) moment and will be here for anyone else with the same problem in the future.

th_killin.jpg

Well my eureka moment 'might' be swapping the selector top section from my old box... if I hvae no joy tomorrow morning on a test run. But that could be 2 hours work and further possible failure...

Can't think of what else to try next....???????????????????????????????????????
