Gearbox/clutch problem... advice please?

Hi to the usual gang, (You know who you are!)

Need a bit of help please.

Problem: When starting in neutral, the engine turns over as if it were (partly?) in gear, but it is definitely in neutral. The van tries to slowly move forward as the engine turns over slowly. If you dip the clutch (even though you are still in neutral) it starts easily. Once started, in neutral, the van remains stationary until it gradually appears to fully disengage. Once started you can change gear ok and drive. But when you try to start in neutral again, the same things happens. The clutch reservoir is full.

Could it be the clutch thrust bearing? (Clutch plate and bearing only done 200miles..

Any ideas?

Cheers, Ray

Very odd:I
The fact that the van tries to move suggests it's in gear, or maybe the overdrive is still engaged.

Very odd. If it's out of gear, there shouldn't be any connection to the back axle [?] I presume the gearbox oil is failrly new, if the clutch has been changed.

That would just make it difficult to engage a gear. A gear either drives or it doesn't so there must be something else going on in there.

Very odd [:0] the g/box is dragging the engine down somehow. Does it do just from cold or when hot as well [?]

Thanks. Will check transmission oil...

Does it when hot or cold. It's like it is partly in gear.... yet the gear lever is definitely in neutral..??

Don't really want to take o/d and box off... but I might have too.

Ray, panky mentioned earlier that the o/d may be staying engaged? do you think this could be the case? is it defo engaging/dis-engaging ok once you are on the move?...extra interested because of my own isues.......hope you resolve it soon:)

Cheers Colin.

Will have a look tomorrow night when its dry.. I hate these bloody nuisance problems that are hard to pin point!!

my guess is the oil in the gearbox is the wrong grade (did you use ep90?) when it's not in gear, the viscosity of the oil could be enough to pull round main shaft... (the input shaft will be going round anyway when the clutch is engaged)

can't imagine the overdrive would make any difference as something is making the gearbox mainshaft go round when it shouldn't be and the overdrive is on the back of the mainshaft

just my 2p!

If you start in neutral so its trying to move and then give it some gas will it drive off or just increase the revs? BMMs theory sounds likley but it is a strange problem. Is there any odd noises like rubbing or grinding of any kind? Could be a gearbox issue of some kind, perhaps a syncro getting jammed and not disengaging without some power behind it? Hope you get it sorted.

Well...alright then, maybe just a little...
