Gear selector

Got the gearbox on today with a bit of a wrestle, had a run up to Leeds also to see Mr Maltas for a thicker splined friction plate. Having a problem with one bit though. Put the gearbox in and didn't realise it had its gear selector coupling still on (the one not numbered on the diagram). I removed the nut but the pin won't come out, tried everything. The one on my van was only held on with a nut and bolt. Does anyone know how to get it out or should I leave this coupling on and remove the yoke instead, I could then attach the yoke to the one stuck on the gearbox? Didn't look like the yoke would come off easily but now I'm back home looking in the manual home looks like the pin screw could unscrew (26). Is this the option most go with or is there a trick to get the coupling off?

thanks chaps

Leave it in place and just use half the joint (24 to 26)from your old box gease it all up with some copper grase when you assemble it will be fine.;)

A commer with even bigger boost will be appering on a screen near you soon!

It's a cotter pin with a tapered face on it (like the ones on a pushbike crank) and you'd be lucky get it out without knackering the thread as it involve judicious use of a hammer. I would leave it in place and split the yolk by taking undoing the screw and nut 26 (refer to diagram;)) You should be able to push out pin 23 easily and it will all come apart. It's a bit fiddly to get back together but better than knackering up yer cotter pin. Don't tighten screw 26 up too tight when you re-assemble as you will lock the whole joint up, the nut is a nylock type so wont fall off.

Thanks again guys. Yer looked like that from the manual just couldn't see the screw when under the. Lesson learnt to rake it with me next time.

At last got it all back together and guess what still cant get reverse even after winding the selected rod right out! I presume there must be a problem on the linkage itself. Looking under the van it seems like the rod at the back of the gearbox isn't movement much (the one that moves on rotation of the linkage). Anyone any ideas in their experience where the week link generally is? Have done the bushes already.

cheers

Hi, I'm no expert but I will try and help, I have had this issue a few times over the years with swapping gearboxes:) ....1st of all check you haven't over tightened joint pin 26 like Panky said.

on the diagram you have a small ball joint (28) ...on the other end of the rod (not shown on the diagram) with an identical ball joint. It works in the same way as a track rod end on your steering.

You will need a 10mm and a 11mm spanner ,,undo the joint and disconnect it....now you can loosen the locknut and you will be able to screw the whole joint both clockwise and anti clockwise, in effect making the control rod shorter by turning it clockwise and longer by turning it anti clockwise.....try turning it clockwise 2 turns and try to select reverse again...
if it still wont select reverse try turning the the joint another turn..you should be able to feel if it's getting better or worse....if it's worse then try turning the joint anti clockwise instead...you should find reverse eventually....it helps if you can get someone to help you, save keep crawling in and out from under the van............my explanation is a bit long winded but I was trying to explain it to you as clearly as possible:)

Failing that Martin Maltas has a special tool for setting this linkage up precisely which he may let you borrow if you ask him very nicely:)

Hi chaps and thanks for the info, heading over this afternoon so will give a try. Martin, sure i get 2nd amd 4th but as its in the garage i can only move it 1 meter :) and cant reverse it out to fully test it. Does look like the rotation of the shaft isn't rotating enough so also going to check if one if the joints is slipping if that's possible

There is a clamped end on selector lever (not shown on the picture you posted but it's No19 on the full diagram) The clamp on this can distort if it's over tightened and cause it to slip on the rod, may be the problem, Thowman had this happen if I remember rightly.

Colin, this is the box that was fitted to Tigger that you sold me - so it is a working box.

Jim, As panky says, check the clamp on the selector. I had this problem with my previous van, and could only get 3rd and 4th. It's number 29 on the diagram

Sorted, thanks guys. Was the T piece that the gearstick connects to the main rod with, the screw with the wire had worked loose putting loads of play in the rotation of the main selector rod. Works a treat now but needs a little bit of adjustment to finish it as 3 rd is still in the dashboard somewhere. Can move it home at last so can put more work into it.
