Frigging clutch

No doubt someone else has had a similar problem to this so HELP
The pedal feels fine, there are no leaks, the slave cylinder is mounted on the rear of the flange, and still there doesnt seem to be enough travel. The bite point is only a few mm off the floor and this makes it almost impossible to get into gear. I dont think there is air in there as i spent most of the morning bleeding it. Ideas anyone?
I tried to space the slave cylinder a bit further back but then realised that only makes the piston act on a different part of the bore so has no effect on the amount of throw.
Only other thing i can think of is to alter the pedal ratio by moving the clevis pin.

The master cylinder piston can stick half way up the bore so you don't get the full travel even though you've bled it properly, the return spring makes it look like it's all the way out but there may be a gap between the pushrod and the end of the piston. Have you tried measuring the movement at the slave cylinder?

Try giving the master cylinder a good tap or two to see if it free's off.

Tried lightly belting the cylinder but piston and rod are in perfect contact. The slave cylinder piston begins to move as soon as the pedal is moved so there is a good hydrolic link between them it seems. Could it be a problem in the clutch itself? It just seems the lever doesnt have enough throw to get the clutch fully disengaged. It is very tiring to drive when you have to perfectly match engin speed to road speed just to get a gear, and dont even think about first... GGGgrrrrrr [:(!]

I guess using a slave cylinder with a smaller internal diameter would result in a longer stroke, i dont know i think it gona give me a stroke....[:0]

The symptoms you describe sounds like the time I mounted our slave cylinder on the wrong side of the flange:I, where gearchange was just about possible at floor level.
Another time was when the fulcrum bracket, fixed with two bolts to the gearbox, came loose/broke resulting in a 'wobbly' clutch action.
Until it disintigrated... resulting in low/no action.
 
Its a new clutch so rust, wear is unlikley and the fulcrum is nice and tight... I am begining to think after reading the thread on Frodo that the clutch release plate must somehow be faulty or assembled wrong. I guess these are the shakedown things that happen but could do without having to pull the 'box out again...

I thought the slave cylinder was supposed to be on the rear side of the flange like yours greg. That is how it is now.

Sorry, I should have said picture showing correct position for standard rod length.
Even if the friction plate was worn down the hydrolics should compensate...
 
i know you put a new clutch plate in the van, but did you check and put a new thrust bearing in as well at the same time?:Das these wear thin also. i nearly made that mistake myself last week on my panel van.

Are you positive you put the clutch plate in the right way round?? on one side it is marked 'Flywheel side'' if its wrong then that will be the problem:I

Oh hell now i am doubting myself! I would have thought i double checked which way round the friction plate went in as i knew of the issue. I just dont know now...
Yes Woolfy the bearing was used but was almost new, no sign of wear, i have changed many clutches so know what a worn one looks like. Probibly should just replace it anyway to be on the safe side. Its looking increasingly like the friction plate is the wrong way around. Is there any way to tell without pulling the box?
Which is the correct way as i dont think it had any markings on it. Either way its goig to have to wait until after the new year when i can get some extra hands to help me lift it back in. (bit of an iffy back)

If you look at the clutch plate with it layed flat on a bench, then turn it over you will notice that one way up the plate is flat and the other way up the center protrudes towards you..........it is the 'flat' side that goes towards the flywheel and the protruding side towards the gearbox........defo sounds like the issue to me:I

Well after having a good squizz through the lever opening in the side of the bell housing it would appear that the release bearing has disintegrated[:(!]:( From what i can see it looks as if it might have been a roller type which is a surprise as i wouldnt normall use one. Oh well at least it looks like that is the issue. Just peevd i have to pull the box to fix it. At least it would explain why the clutch worked for the first while no bother, which is also why i was a little skepticle of having put the driven plate in back to front
Here is a dodgy pic, you can just see the edge of the front part of the bearing which looks like a shiney shim. It has detached itself from the bearing and is floping around on the shaft. [B)]

Decided to see what i could do so went down to the garage and began to unbolt things. Off came the prop, gear linkage(pain), speedo cable, starter motor, slave cylinder, overdrive solinoid cable, flywheel cover, exhaust(its bolted to the belhousing) and a few other bits and bobs. Undid the bellhousing bolts and pulld the box out. After unbolting the clutch this is the damage. The driven plate was on the right way round in the end. Seems you cant use this type of bearing in a commer. Hmmmph.

It must be reassuring for the mental state that the friction plate was correct!

Will that pressure plate centre piece not clean up then[?]
 
Looks like a bearing type thrust bearing has been used, instead of the carbon type[V]
