The lights we have just put in had the exact same connectors. It was a simple job - although I cut the wrong wire a few times! But if it is just headlight replacement then even simpler, it was s simple as taking each of the three connectors off and putting them back on the new lamp.

Not a problem. It was ebay as per - Item number 220371805083. They were £65. I wanted to get the P700 rather than the 'In the style of' type lamps. Just search for Tripod headlights and a few will come up - just found these 390149731183 which are a few pounds cheaper. Just make sure they come with bulbs!

Here's a pic of LNK's front lights, the illuminated ones below the bumper are the small sidelights. The indicators are next to the sidelights and as you can see the 'bulbs' look clear when not flashing. However, when the indicators are flashing they are amber/orange. LED bulbs make this possible.

Congratulatons on getting rid of the "extra" indicators. The van looks so much better now, I totally agree. :)

On the bulb colour discussion topic, please bear in mind that the single indicators - as originally fitted - double as sidelights. So the bulbs will need to be white/clear if you end up wiring the sidelights to these lamps. If you connect sidelights/parking lights in the headlamps, however, the indicator lamps could be amber. As per original specification, white bulbs are absolutely fine and legal.

I'm not 100% sure on regulations concerning sidelights/indicators, but I am pretty sure that what's mentioned earlier in this thread - that amber indicators were made mandatory Europewide in the mid-60s - is correct.

In the US, though, it's a different story [xx(]

I have gone for orange indicators on the PA now - they were original white ones which doubled up as side lights but I went for these headlights which negates the need for that

if you want to retain the clear lenses, but dont want amber bulbs that make the clears look odd, buy some chrome bulbs that flash amber when luminated.

The tripod lamps just take standard Halogen H4s available everywhere and more readily available than the old bulbs or sealed beams. (I know as we import the tripods ;) )

It's been a while since this thread so I thought I would dust it off!

As you know, I am slightly lacking in respect to the mechanical mensa minds of the majority on here. Fonty has an autobox but we are now thinking of changing to manual. The obvious to go with the Pinto engine would be the Type 9 5 Speed box, from many a Ford car.

However, looking at them, they all seam to have the gear stick attached to the box itself. When attached to the engine, it would mean the gear stick would in effect be roughly under the table in the back! Can this be moved? And if so is it workable by cables/rods? It may be a really silly question, but I had to ask :I:)

Probably....a silly Q I mean...think about it, where is the standard g/box in relation to the actual gear lever?...

We need updated pics of Mr Fontaine? I swear I thought you said he had gone to stay with Bobby for a while? have you gone and had him slammed???

the commer box is fitted in cars with a normal gearstick ;)
its a matter of sorting out the linkage to work the lever. Had the same problem fitting the o/d box in the j4, as its from a mg magnette :)
As it happens we have a full linkage up for grabs, yours for 2 million quid and a choc chip cherry cake :D

I'll get some pics for you next week, she hs had an extended stay at Bobbys because she is a pain in the bum - she has been there since March [:0].

I can't quite stretch to two million AND a choc chup cherry cake, but how about a straight two million choc chip cakes?

In cars, with the normal gearbox I assumed as the engine was upfront, under the bonnet, by the time the gearbox was connected the stick would be roughly in the right place :I So you think I would just need a commer linkage? I was confused looking at pics of the type 9 gearbox -

especially at the bottom one as the gear lever looks like it is attached there. Does that just become removable then? AlsoTim, does the bell housing need to be the same as the one we have now on the autobox?

I won't forget cream Chris - are we still on for Sunday? Harvey is no great loss, he's not to be trusted ;) He has spent too long in the garage, he's going to play the field for some time yet :D

there is at least 2 different type 9,s, one has a longer mainshaft, although it doesn,t matter which you use. Try and get one with a bellhousing, remember the 1600/2000 9mm difference fiasco [B)][xx(]
also get a flywheel,clutch,pressure plate, thrust bearing,clutch release arm and a spigot bush for a manual.
most boxes operate on the same principle with a pivoting rod to shift gears. it,ll be a matter of marrying up the two with some ingenuity and swearing ;)

and sunday is cool [8D]

Jon, being the naive machanic I am, your g/box looks alien to me!! but instead of the gearnob coming straight from the box like yours, a variety of linkage rods link up with wonderful pivot joints and rods all in the same quest...
