Dolly The Autosleeper

So things have been a bit slow going recently due to some "financial issues" (im skint :D:D). but i have been doing what i can. been keeping an eye out for usefull bits and pieces. got my hands on some strong angle iron and G clamps to make my outriggers ect:). today i went to my local sheet metal dealer and got some metal for the floor repairs and temp bodywork repairs ;) and have been making up templates. when i got home i started chatting to my uncle about my outriggers and how irratated i was because they didnt have thick enough sheet metal for me to make them [:(!][V]. 5 mins later he turns up with 4 of these beuties [^]

not sure on the thickness but i would say its 1.5-1.75mm so will be good and strong [^]

I decided to get my angle iron and tools out and in no time at all i was holding this :D:D;)

Just got to cut and bend the ends and it will be finished but the rain is on its way so i stopped for now. it was easy enough to make and turned out better than i expected so finally i can get my spring hangers and outriggers made up ready to be welded in (nov);)

In the next 2 weeks im hoping to make them up... and get dolly's bum in the air for a session :p:D:D fuel tank coming out. axle needs to be dropped and then i can attack the rot without fear of being blown to pieces [)]:) on a lighter note, we went down the mother in laws the other week. when we got back i went straight to dolly to start her up and give her a run....[V] wouldnt start. figured she was out of petrol so went and got some and chucked a tenner in her, still wouldnt start...[:(!]:( got the hump and went in to lick my wounds [:(!] next morning the wife says to me "you did put the lead back on your engine didnt you" oops :I:I:I after putting my Coil lead back on she fired up like a dream first time :I:D:D what a plonker!!

Nice one Paul good bit of bending going on - is it stainless, looks very shiny[8D]
That's another tenners worth of juice you'll need to drain off when you take the tank out LOL;)

think he said it was galvonised. i know he said it wont rot so i fugure that means stainless lol [?][?] looks great though :D:D yh more to drain, but at least i will have more to put in her once she is solid ;)

If it's galvo then make sure the zinc on the surface is cleaned off with your angle grinder down to the steel before you weld, it gives off nasty fumes when it burns[xx(]

yh i know m8 but cheers. knowing him its probably just stainless but either way i will be cleaning the edges before welding ;) i thought galvonised was normally a matt grey colour though? this metal is quite shiney lol but that may just be my pride taking over lol

Nice work Paul [^]
It,s galv, shiney when new but dulls down to grey with age ;)
As Panky says, don,t breathe the fumes in as it gives off arsenic [xx(]

quick question people :I i know have both rear spring hangers and both outriggers bent to shape, just gotta fold the ends and drill/weld the pipe in for the spring hangers :) im hoping to get her up on axle stands in the week and drop the tank ect, Q is [?] im planning on un bolting the rear spring hangers but i was thinking i might leave the fronts bolted up and just lower the axle to the floor, would that work [?] would i need to dis-connect the prop as well? im not sure if the brake lines are long enough either, will probably make itself obvious when i get under her next but i thought i would ask you guys first;)

i would just dis-connect everything and drag the axle out but that would mean bleading the brakes and although i can pretty much build a car i cant bleed brakes to save my life (literally) :D:D

It's possible to lower the axle enough to get to the rear spring hangers, you will most probably need to replace the section of floor above as well so most of the cutting and welding can be done from above:)

What floor section above the spring hanger:D all i got is a big nasty hole behind the wheelarch. and on the drivers side there is not evan an outrigger there anymore lol. im getting quite excited now as i have some nice new ones to fit :) im gonna have to lose the bottom flute along the side for now but keep the other 1. on the bright side i can use what i cut out to (the good bits) to repair the rear valance flutes i think :D;)

My God! 29 Today, im only a year away from being a middle aged man:(good excuse for a couple of hours on dolly though ;):D

Started making a few repair panels for the cab floor, eventually i will be getting some fancy new panels but til then i want her usable :)[8D]
Got her up on axle stands and got her wheels off :) the guy who fitted the brakes didnt tighten the wheel nuts up [:(!][V][xx(]

Drained and removed the fuel tank [8D] sheared 1 bolt but after all this time i thought they came out pretty easy:) i had to cut the plastic overflow pipe off as it was pretty much past it but im thinking of replacing it with rubber hose instead of plastic :p Fuel tank isnt in bad shape considering how old it is but i drained 16 litres of fuel out so looks like my sender is knackered[?] but will remove it and try it manually :)

removing the tank i made a STUPID mistake, i forgot the trickle that comes out as you fiddle it out [B)] thats right[V] straight in my eyeball. 20 mins waisted pouring water in my eye to sort that left me with a blurry eye so i had to pack up my tools and call it a day but im pretty happy [^]
i did quickly snap a pick of the underneath [^] not half as bad as i was expecting. just surface rust and a wet patch on my diff but im not sure yet if that was a leacky seal or just i bit of petrol soaked into the grime :(

Good bit of progress Paul [^]
Before you try removing the sender test it first by connecting it up with a longer wire and an earth wire, then turn it upside down and it should read full. Don,t forget to empty it first :I

yh will try that first. is the fuel tank meant to have an earth wire? i found a ring connection under 1 of the bolts but no wire?i figured the tank was probably earthed through the direct body contack but could that be why my sender dont work[?]

lol, least im not the only 1 to make i silly mistake then:I today the rear axle was meant to get dropped out the way so cutting could commence:D but its throwing it down at the min[V] hopefully it dry's out by this afternoon eh lol. im starting to get the hang of making panels now so not all bad:) will put another earth to the tank to be sure and fingers crossed i wont need a new servo. hopefully by my next birthday dolly will have tax and mot:D:D just going to tackle 1 end at a time:) back end is worst thus it goes first lol. anyone got any tips for cutting out the old floor rear corners and outrigger?

Everything is spot welded so if you can drill them out, otherwise just take an angle grinder to it;)

Some useful pics on here, even Woolfy had to start somewhere:)

cheers m8, will have a read in a mo. i assume i will have to cut the floor off upto the chassis rail to remove the outrigger? is there a closing plate that goes between the new floor and the outrigger?

Dolly Commer Is Here http://66.129.69.181/forum/topic.asp?TOPIC_ID=6833

so i assume you spot weld the closing plate on then spot weld the floor to the closing plate?
