Distributor cap has brass dust inside

Anyone know if the 1500 petrol engine 1961 commervan distributor is d8p , this is what the site I am buying it off think is the correct model ,, I never knew lucas 25d distributor came in so many different models , any help really appreciated . I just want to be sure I am getting the right one

The manual says 25D4
Can you share where you're getting the dizzy?
Here's the link to the manual, scroll down a bit in the General Data to find the details of the dizzy - the suppliers might be interested in the advance curve data.

Yes I have the manual downloaded and mentioned to them that it said 25d4 , I am not very good at put up links and things , I just know the basics , I am going to take out the distributor and send them photos ,I already sent some with the cap removed but they are still not sure , the one they have on file is for a 67 commer which they say uses a d8p model , to be sure I will just send them photos , the sellers are apparently a group of classic car owners . I will put the name of them up in a minute , Thanks again panky

The name of the place I am trying toget the Distributor is power spark ignition. So far they seem very helpful and there responses have been quick and I am impressed that they are making sure that they are sending me the right distributor,

I got my electronic dizzy from them. I don’t think it works but it’s been in the box since 2018 and only fitted it last month. Don’t let that put you off as I cannot say if it was always broken or if it failed when I fitted it. I very much doubt it’s still under warranty lol.

For the price I will take the chance , they have very good reviews ... some parts these days are so cheaply made I got new cap leads and rotor off a crowd in Ireland and the quality was sht ,they came in lucas boxes but not one of the parts itself had lucas on them . Should lucas parts have the lucas name or number on them .

The differences are internal, the vacuum advance and bob weights for mechanical advance determine the advance curve. The different timing settings laid out in the manual should give them the data the need to set it up but to be honest if they have already done the research then I would go with what they suggest and not be too worried.

Pictures someone may recognise the make and model

Looks like a 25D, it should be stamped on the upper face. Is there anything stamped on the raised section of the case?

Yes panky the numbers 40682E the E could be be a B and thenover abit from that T122 1160 , just waiting on a reply from powerspark ignition to see what they say aswell . Are these 25d 4 distributor interchangeable or does it have to have the same model numbers or can I just get any 25d4 and use that ?

They will fit no problem, I fitted one to Harvey off my Morris Minor and it worked fine, Later models used a 45D which is interchangeable with the 25D. I have known electronic dizzy's off late Minis being used too, most Rootes group and BMC cars were fitted with them in the 60's and 70's. The main differences are the fitting to the block, some used two bolts, some used one and others used a clamp. Apart from that it was the advance curve that was different which was tuned with different bob weights and springs to match the various engines.
I'm sure Powerspark will sort you out :)

Thanks panky , yes I was looking and seen that Morris miners and minis use the same , I am still waiting on a reply from them , so too check for play it can only be done outside of the engine and there should not be side to side movement? So if I just bought 25d4 does the 4 stand for 4cylinder? I could just throw it in and not worry about the weights in it ect , sorry for all the ? I only ask because i have ordered parts before and i have been giving wrong one plus i have to wait for about a week for it to get to Ireland . Cheers again

No problems with the questions, ask away:) And yes I think the 4 refers to the number of cylinders,. You might as well wait for Powerspark to reply, as you won't get it any faster with the bank holiday weekend going on, and you'll get as near a perfect match as they can make it - it will then be on their records for the rest of us too ;)
Have you tried the van with your old dizzy and a new cap?

Have you tried the van with your old dizzy and a new cap? Yes I bought a new cap and rotor and leads ,supposed to be lucas parts came in lucas boxes no branding on the parts put them on and it wouldnt start the cap fit but it looked a bit bigger by a few mila metres , puf the old cap and leads on and it started straight away , I only tryed the new one a couple of times ,got a gut feeling they weren't right so that was the end of them . I would prefer original stuff but for now I will just have to go with powerspark and the d8p distributor , They got back on to me this morning so I will order that today . Thanks again

Quick ?; just before I order is this just a standard points and not electronic
