it was a fantastic plane like tim said, but what really killed it off was its fuel consumption. it was a very thirsty beast to fly and they phased them out.;)

Bit of a tendency to leak hydraulic oil onto the bottom engine and catch fire too :I
Had the pleasure of seeing one fly at Duxford many years ago, and my hearing has never been the same since :D

Lightning was designed by W.E.W Petter, he also designed the Westland Whirlwind which was another fantastic aircraft well ahead of its time, also killed off by politics :(
Built before the Spitfire, faster, first aircraft to have cannons (4x 20mm) in the nose, first with high vision bubble canopy, leading edge radiators, high tailplane, magnesium fuselage [^]
Not one survives, only 116 built. Pilots loved it, as did ground crew.

I remember seeing the Lightening at Church Fenton Air show, when I was very young. Now live 3 miles from the air field, but they don't do shows any more [V]

Well, I need several rather large ones......

The LDV Maxus saga still continues.

After first spending a day or so taking off a turbo, then to find there were pieces of piston ring in the sump and then buying a replacement engine for £1000 plus drat - I finally turned the key on thursday to take it to a place to have the ECU programmed with the new injectors and pump - only to get there to discover that the sump was filling with water and I now had rather a nice grey substance in it. I drove about 60 miles. When I got back home, I drained 10 litres out of a sump that I had just put 6.5 lites of new oil in. Drat, Drat and double Drat.....

So today was spent undoing all the installation work I'd done last week, and tomorrow the engine will be back out and I'll be heading back to Essex to change the replacement engine for a replacement replacement engine.....

I suspect that one of the liners has either cracked or moved during removal and fitting, and this has lead the sump to fill with so much coolant. I did suspect the oil cooler, but that would give different symtoms as the oil would go into the cooling system en masse as it's at higher pressure.

I don't think I would get many wardrobes in the back of the imp van, but I could probably get the imp van in the back of the maxus. :)

Well, my Berlingo might be a bit grotty, but it's got a huge 2.5 litre diesel engine strapped on a pallet in the back. How many family saloons can manage that?

Of to pick up the replacement for the replacement tomorrow. :)

The Berlingo coped without a problem. The only issue was getting the engine in at the workshop with the tractor as the rear door opens upwards, and we couldn't lift the engine in, so we had to be creative with the pallet and a jack.

With the engine loaded, it sat a bit low at the back, but didn't feel too bad to drive. Good little motor.

Anyway, got the new engine. Swapped the turbos over as the one on the one I took back is quite new, and the other a bit knackered. Aim to have it in and running on Friday. Fingers crossed.
