This should be a photo of my new (toy) - PROJECT, Commer Calthorpe Campervan, Does anyone out there know anything about this conversion? Please let me know:)
 
It has the much envied sliding doors (watch out if commerracer is about)
 
Had a mk1 transit with sliding doors many years ago, used to go down to newquay regularly. Me and my mate thought we were the dogs doo daa's driving around with the doors slung back,rock music blasting from the "Stereo Cassette" player and chatting the chicks up along the way:D:D.aaaggghhh those were the days;););)
doors a bit drafty in the winter though:(:(

back to my "rootes"
 
Don't have any info myself I'm afraid, fascinated to see it and hopefully find out more. Note it has the suicide drivers door and a very large bush growing out of the front:D - did all calthorpes have this?[:eek:)] Best of luck, looks pretty good - does it need much doing?

Was going to say from the indicator/sidelight combo that it must be a PA base therefore 65 or earlier

There was an article a couple of few ago in Practical Classics which compared various motorcaravans from the 1960's and 70's including a Commer Jennings. Although there was not a Commer Calthorpe there were two Calthorpe conversions, one on a Bedford CA and one on a Ford Thames. I seem to remember from my youth that most Calthorpe conversions were on the Ford Thames base, although it may just be that I remember the Thames Calthorpe as I had one as a Dinky toy :)

I've still got my Corgi Commer constucters set, although I have lost the bench seat which sits in the back of the pick up :(

have just started reading this article in back issue of PC from spring 1994, as found by new commer owning friends - haven't spotted Calthorpe mentioned yet though - Glyn recognised name from somewhere

It was not that particular article and I can't remember whether it was before or after 1994. I particularly remember the Commer, as the owner had rescued it from an orchard for about £20 and it passed its MOT after a clean and a service! It said there were similar bargains to be found out there (I've been looking ever since). I do recall that the Commer owner was a member of the Classic Camper Club, which was only formed around 1991. Is this owner a member of the forum?
I will take a trip up to the loft sometime, although I had a clear out of PC's some time ago.

Hi, do you mean that tangoed orange thing that is every where you look, no but it is my son's! And a nice bus it is too! HAD MANY happy camping trips parked side by side in the Highwayman - (sadly just sold it) - MISSING HER ALREADY had to got to get on with my new project Calthorpe.:)

Hi looking forward to summer cruising with doors open - if we get a dryer summer than last year!!! Not all calthorpes have the tree at the front, i used it as a brake when parking up, cos sadly no brakes when off loading off trailer[:0] Not a great deal for the age. Looks like undersealed from new, so underneath in good condition. Just needs scraping off and redoing. :)quote:

Commer Calthorpe it is a 1961 Home Cruiser. In good general condition for a 47 year older! Getting on with restoration, but need a 10 spline overdrive prop, possibly off a hillman minx, or hunter, e.t.c.,can anyone help? Also looking for gas light glass shade for interior. :)
