Need to buy a new clutch for the commer. Quick eBay search gets me a $400 option but most other clutches for other cars are $200approx. Does anyone know what also fits the commer? Surely it’s the same as many other cars??? Hillman??
The Hillman one is smaller, the Commer clutch is the same as the Holbay Rapier or Hunter GLS. If the splines on your gearbox input shaft are the coarse type then a Bedford CA plate will fit but I don't think the rest of it will. A good upgrade while you're doing the clutch is to fit an MGB release bearing in place of the carbon thrust, a little filing of the fork is required but the MGB bearing will outlast the Commer one.
Away on a trip in Pootle and clutch bearing sounds like it is dying. Only replaced clutch 2000 miles ago when engine and box rebuilt so it is a surprise. Hoping to get back at weekend without an AA ride-of-shame! On the plus side, engine and box seem great! The bearing fitted is a horrid carbon job and I'd be interested in using a roller type if anyone can advise on what to use and what mods are needed? Cheers Tony
Looks the part that Panky Was your other knob from a Triumph ? It was indeed, confusing to others that it showed reverse was on the opposite side to the Commer gate

Son Ben and I dropped the geatbox last night and the graphite bearing has been ground up and spread around the bellhousing. Also the thrust plate on the diaphragm spring is very loose so not sure which was cause and which was effect. Need a new cover plate and bearing at least...
One concern though is new bearing and carrier. Old carrier had round trunnion and clips to hold it in place. However the new bearing carrier doesn't have fully round trunnion and clips won't fit. Should there be some sort of retainer or does it rely on clutch plate stopping carrier moving forward and off the actuating fork?
After trawling the interweb I think there should be a couple of clips to hold the carrier and I will get a pair. Actually, once fitted there isn't much of a gap between the bearing and diaphragm spring so the carrier can't actually move far anyway...
Well the complete clutch with bearing came from Speedy with the roller bearing release jobbing. It fits the fork really well but the retaining clips from the Old graphite bearing won't fit. Looking on Sunbeam service manual suggests some circular spring clips part 16...
