Clutch replacement

gearbox bearings![:0] - what will that mean then??[xx(]

The noise isnt too bad, but assume it will only get worse??

It's an awkward job to do the front bearing I'm afraid, the input shaft looks like it should just pull out but in fact you need to take the selectors out and drop the fist motion shaft to disengage the gears. To do this dummy shafts are pushed in to hold the selectors and gear train together. The input shaft can then be withdrawn. Thats the easy bit, its a bugger to get it back together[B)] It would be easier to source another gearbox - or live with the whine:I

Straight to the point..... thanks Panky.

Well, will have to live with it for a minute, if I can.

But will try to source a replacement, as you may remember it is also cracked, so perhaps has done alot more in its former life than 'Wilma.'

I think MM said he had one..??

Cheers

Here to help:)
I forgot to mention that you need to separate the OD from the gearbox to knock the selector and first motion shafts out:I
Saying that I did it - the first (and only) time I've had a gearbox to bits, I'll need to do it again because my bearings are screaming more than whining - especially on the overrun[xx(]

That's not the gearbox screaming Panky, it's Babs in the passenger seat "Slow down, Slow down" :D

Panky,MM,CR etc... I have been away camping on Dartmoor over the W/E - fantastic! Anyway, the g/b whine isn't that bad at all... can certainly live with it for the time being. You can't hear it at all when moving along, just a subtle whine when ticking over.

Anyway, I mentioned my o/d had stopped working... well it has, but intermittantly works when in 4th, it kind of judders in and out!?!? This means the circuit/solenoid is good, but the switch in the g/b may be worn or something??? - as the connection is not being made properly.

What could be the reason for this?? and is it adjustable?

Got a similar problem with Peggy. Won't work in 3rd. When in 4th I found that if I 'move' the gear lever right and forward as far as it will go without disengaging 4th the o/d will work. Happy with that for now.

Peggy drinks too much!
If I told you I was a pathological liar, would you believe me?

I think Colin and Helen had a similar problem and it turned out to be the solenoid. But since the box has been out and everything disturbed I would do as the other guys say first, oil level is the easiest, good quality 20/50.

Just noticed this thread, fell into that slave cylinder trap some time ago:I

One thing I do like about the PB is that I can remove/replace the gearbox, on the drive, without the use of ramps or jacks or pit, just wooden blocks, levers, reason and persuasion!

Once for that hidden core plug and once for a broken release arm bracket.

Currently living with 4th jumping out of gear on the overun and the return of a wobbly clutch action, maybe the broken bracket coming loose again...

No, only ever use engine oil, especially in overdrives [B)]

Noooooooooo[:0] I think the sevice sheet says SAE 30 but 20/50 (without the additives) is fine.
