Clutch plates

Well I set the garden hose up with a reducer down to a 4mm hose which gave a good jet and enabled me to feed it right up, around and through the water jacket from that core plug hole. The gunk seems to have been particularly built up in the bottom back corner where I removed that (only really scummy looking) core plug. I realise there might well be pockets of scum sat undisturbed but I gave it a 'good agitation' for half an hour from 'all areas' with the hose and the water runs clear... that was tough to type and not sound dodgy.

But... one quite major thing I found was the heater matrix feed out of the water pump was completely blocked solid with scale. I know a major oversight which I should have found earlier but with that seemed such good flow looking into the radiator I was not focusing on the other bits of the system nor had a desire to start pulling the pump apart . Now that increased flow I'm thinking is upped pressure due to blockage in matrix loop??

Anyway tomorrow it's one more flush and reassemble - fingers crossed, got a hire on Saturday

Good result. It could be the blocked heater connection was causing an air lock but getting rid of all that gunk is a good thing.

Well...

Had to get the van to Sophs second ever gig on the Saturday. Core plug didn't show on the Friday. A quick phone round found a car transporter trailer. Then fashioned a temp plug with 2 washers so I could load the van onto the trailer and shunt about with at least some coolant.

Got to the gig - starter spinning freely and not engaging. Then the heavens opened. Dragged van off trailer with the transit. Commer stuck in mud for 3 days until a 4 trak came and saved us. Fun and games ah.

Only got the new core plug in last night after work at about mid night, along with a working starter. Took her for a spin round the block after work today and what do ya know - she didn't overheat!

Soph's got a gig again on Saturday so hope to take her for a better spin tomorrow to confirm my suspicions - the rebuild is complete (for now).

Thanks for everyone's input to helping me get to the bottom of this. And everything else.

Good work!

Glad to hear a good flushing has improved things. If the engine was badly gunked-up, I'd suspect that the heater matrix would benefit from a good flushing in both directions. That's simple to do as the rubber hoses are easy to connect to.

I say this because eventually the muck in the heater matrix will distribute itself all round the cooling system, including of course back in the engine. My heater matrix was about half full of muck before I cleaned it out.
