Hi guy's,I have lost my overdrive now, poor "Ran" started with having trouble to get into 3rd gear, then lost overdrive on 3rd gear, still worked on 4th gear, then had trouble getting into 4th gear, then finally lost overdrive alltogether...still drives but slower
sometime it use to happen to me in my triumph 2000 so i got under the car and gave it a gentle tap with the hammer and all was ok after that, until another time it happened again six months later,so i repeated the same trick but nothing happened ,i thought it was knackered but then my dads mate who use to work at the triumph factory said check the wire which runs down the gear stick from the overdrive switch to the solonoid it may have got cut or worn through from all the gear changes over the years, so i did check and sure enough he was right,
topped up with gear oil,no difference...power at the switch, not at the solenoid, followed wires can't find any wear so the mystery unsolved....I think those devonshire hills have killed it [}]
i cant remember now but does the live wire go straight to the solonoid first and then to the switch or the other way round, try disconnecting the wire from its spade clip and clean up the connection with some wire wool, if that doesnt do the trick then give it a gentel tap with a hammer whilst the engine is running because if the oil was low inside something might have got stuck slightly, like i said earlier thats what i did with mine and it was ok. actually thinking back now isnt there two wires one going to the switch and one going back to the solonoid ,input and output have a good look and check again because you might have a live feed to the switch but not one going back.
i was shocked when i opened up ran,s silencer[:0] as you see in the pic blanked off with 3 holes about 1/2 inch diameter, not even equal to the pipe bore. no wonder it runs hot, the back pressure must be collosal. the rc40 is straight through and offers virtually zero back pressure .on a 125 bhp engine it costs 2-3 bhp [8D].the same can,t be said of the original[:0]
"you were only supposed to blow the bloody doors off"
wow [:0] doing 60 mph in [?][?]lot less seconds this appears to have perked Ran up,I need to fill the tank to see if I get more than my normal 150 miles to the tank, will keep you posted.there is an overdrive on ebay for those that might be interested in keeping the original engine & getting better ecconomy I didn't have my foot to the floor either due to my steering problems [:0]...so with the overdrive & rc 40 exhaust how will this compare to standard?? can't wait to fit that cam....will also be interesting to see how much easier if at all it will be getting up those hills [}]
wow so far done 100 miles on half a tank if I get 200 miles from the tank will mean I am getting 50 miles a tank extra [:0] [^] also sitting at 65 mph round country lanes
