Bazil's 1972 Commer PB

Been welding and grinding and cutting today. Nothing very exicting to take pictures of.
I am a day behind with fitting the roof but I am not too bothered because I don't want to bodge anything by rushing.
I have left about 3/4 of the near-side gutter and side panel but I am going to see if I am happy with leaving them once I have run the gutters around from the drivers door as there seems to be a bit of a tilt on the gutter that I have left.
Just got to put a coat of weld-thru around the top of the side and rear panel and then the van is ready.
The gutters need cleaning and spraying and by the time that is done it might even be another day [V] Still got to strip the remains of GreenBean of the replacement roof yet!
Watch this space.

EDIT

I became itchy so when I was outside I cleaned up and sprayed the gutters ready. Just got to drill a million holes to plug weld them on. :(

Didn't spend a great deal of time on the Van today. Tried to get hold of a Spot Welder to do the gutters and eventually decided on buying a Metal Punch to save drilling the gutters and then I am going too plug weld them on. Glad I took this route now as Plugs are meant to be stronger than Spots and I am going to be doing some pulling about on the gutters to get them perfect....I hope.

This is the replacement Gutter clamped and tacked:

The Gutter in place and tacked. I am very pleased with the finish I got with this Gutter as this is the Side Panel that I completely renewed:

I still have plenty of Welding, fettling (sp?) and Grinding to do, but it is starting to look better and now has more metal in the van than when it arrived (I think [:eek:)])

Had a bloody awful day today [:(!]

First job was to plug weld the last 20 or so holes in the gutter and the welding wire ran out so I had to drive 15 miles to go and get some.

Then I was unhappy with the final lines of the passenger side gutter due to the cone repair being too high on the front side, this meant having to cut through the side of the cone, right through the lap inside and then tapping the cut closed [}:)].

Spent quite a while cleaning up the Autosleeper roof to go on and in the process I had my grinder go up in smoke [}:)] so I now have to get a replacement.

The top of the side panel where the gutters sit I ending up using Tigerseal to seam seal right around the van before priming so I am hoping that the repairs will be good for a few years yet!

After using every last flap disc and thin cutting disc I own, I eventually got the roof in a condition where I could lift it onto the van. It makes it all worthwhile: (The roof is only sat on the van as I have some cutting to do to get it to sit down and correct yet ;))

I have got to repair the whole roof around the sides and back where it sits into the gutters but I am not rushing it and at least it is another part of the van that I know is going to be free of rot. :)

I wasn't going to do anything to the van today, but......

Cut the roof where it was to meet the section of roof left on the van so I was able to push the roof up tight to the cab roof, plug welded it all up and was very satisfied with the finish.
For some reason the replacement roof is a bit longer than what I need :p Don't know why, I am guessing that the vans varied abit when first built, oh well, easy enough to fix.

Started 'stitching' the sides of the roof back together by adding in repair sections where it sits in the gutter. Pleanty of welding to do when all the repairs are in and then I am going to move onto the cab area and the peak.

Maybe more tomorrow and pictures ;)

So, lots of welding and grinding left to do. Bit of straightening up of the gutters and another corner repair to make. First corner repair was an absolute bugger to make, especially for my amateur metal working skills [xx(]

Don't know why the replacement roof had as much as a 1/4" of filler on it in places, especially at the rear corners. It had holes in the corners, but adding 1/4" of thickness [?]

The gutter over the back doors is where I have been struggling most, mostly due to there not being much lap onto the door frame and the heat of the plug welding has been distorting it a bit. Plenty of hammer and dollying to do :D

I am looking forward to getting this part of the project done and cracking on with the cab roof and peak now :p

You're making a fine job of this mate, really;) Don't dare discredit yourself when i'm asking questions on how to bleed slave cylinders HAHAHAHAHA!

That's a mighty fine repair panel for an amateur effort. I struggle putting 90 degree bends on straight panels, never mind double curvature.
