Bazil's 1972 Commer PB

Hi,

Its been quite a while since I touched the Commer, but at least it is housed in the shed, which has a roof!!!

Found a few minutes today to finish making the repair sections for the side panel tops on the drivers side so I can fit the new gutter sections. Basically another 3 or 4 of these:

So I can continue this repair all the way along ready for the new Gutter section:

I am hoping to find some time tomorrow (friday) to get the welder out and get them welded in. Then I can see if the same is required the other side, sort the rear cones and door pillars out and then it is ready to put the replacement roof section off Green Bean. Sounds easy, but it is more likely going to take months at the moment :(.
I will probably MOT the van at that stage and use it for a little bit just to cure the itch!

Good work fella. On a different note altogether.................I think you need to spend less time on the van and get those gutters on your garage sorted out before they spring a leak too HAHAHAHAAHA!

Yup, 'tis a green roof on top of my garage.

Right, todays progress...

Made the front side panel repair that butts against the door pillar:

Then after plenty of marking, cutting, tacking and adjusting, I ended up with this:

Ok it does not look like much, but at least I have some metal to weld the gutters on to!!!!
Considering I had to make the repair sections in 500mm lengths I was extremely pleased with the finish and how it all butts up and sights.
A lot of welding to fill up the gaps now and a lot of grinding with flap discs to get it smooth.

Also started picking apart the roof I got off Martin Maltas. Removed the drivers side rear cone and rear door pillars and top.

The Rear drivers side cone is being cleaned up, repaired, aquasteel where required and then a mixture of Upol Acid 8 and Weld Thru Primers.

The rear door pillars will be cleaned tomorrow and aquasteeled extensively ready to offer them up and cut the rusty ones out.

Unfortunately there is very little room above the van, which is ok for the repairs that I have got to do. As for when the Pop-top goes on, it will be a case of altering the ceiling joists and making them into scissor trusses. Otherwise I will have to just get an all weather cover for outside.

Update time.....

Rusty bit of Green Bean (Whats left of it), went from this:

To this, all nicely cleaned up with a twisted wire wheel on my grinder and several weld repairs:

To this, with a very meticulous couple of coats of Aquasteel:

To this, several good doses of Upol Zinc Weld-Thru where the welds will be and Upol Acid 8 everywhere else:

Closely followed by some careful measuring and lining up, [:0]:

All measurements tallied and it all seemed pretty good, so I completed the welding, grinding and priming and it now looks like it was never done, apart from an obvious lack of rust.

As I am using an Autosleeper roof I will probably go for something along that route as far as layout goes, but with a more modern look, depends, still quite a long way off!

Its not off a mini, its a '71 VW Fastback bootlid which is waiting to be restored in the garage, there are 2 bonnets for it behind the lid.

VW boot[:0] oh my God, get it out quick before the terminal rot infection spreads - to late;)
That is one mighty fine repair job - very expertly done[^] I think what Bazz means about the corner braces is the rounded upper corners on the original frame. They spread the stress around the frame corners and prevent things flexing a bit.
