MOT time:I
Last time the nice man suggested the front shocks were a bit soft, not an official advisory but I remembered and bagged a set of new old stock Lockheed ones off ebay soon after. A bit soft was a little kind I thought when I changed them last weekend, there was very little resistance compared with the new set and whoever changed them last had left out the spacer bush on the bottom eye bolt on one and on the other side put a piece of copper tube in, it was a bit distorted[xx(] I found a piece of steel pipe that was pretty close to the correct size and made a couple of spacers out of that, it was a bit tight getting the rubbers into the bottom bracket but at least I know the shocks are well supported now. The ride is much less floaty now and he takes the bends much better, I quite liked it bouncy but I'll get used to it:I A good greasing of me nipples and replaced a ball joint split pin that had rusted away and that was it, booked in for half eight in the morning.

I'm not sure if good luck is the right thing to say as I'm pretty positive that Harvey will pass with flying colours....fingers crossed for you and don't forget to brake hard a few times on the way there to balance them:D[8D]

I got to the test centre just before half eight and sauntered into reception where the girl said I was booked in for nine, I said I thought it was earlier but she told me the owner, John, didn't do Wednesdays and it would be his son doing the test at nine. Bugger I thought, John has always done Harveys tests and is well aware of old car foibles. Never mind Paul, the son, is about 50 so he's been around cars for a while and knows his stuff but it didn't bode well when he stuck his head round the door and asked me how to switch the lights on:I. I went and showed him and reminded him about front wheel hand brake, brake lights and lifted the drivers seat so he could find the chassis number. Anyway I sat and waited....and waited........and waited until the deed was done until he finally appeared, 'Just a couple of things' he said[V] 'slight corrosion to one of the rear brake pipes and a tiny bit of play in the centre steering idler - other than that everythings fine........ passed[8D]
We had a chat, once he had figured how to reverse the van off the ramp, unfortunately he believed the position of reverse on the MGB OD switch on the gearlever and kept getting second:D He loved the van and said he had never examined one before and it was a nice change, he took delight in telling his young (29 and 27) wide eyed mechanics technicians how the steering likages worked and how to replace and ream out the idler bushes, 'I don't think they could grasp the concept of actually repairing something' he said - but at least there's one more classic friendly spanner monkey in the family business[^]
