Back of the garage

Wow, that was a nice simple fix [8D] a good excuse to fit a leccy pump ;)

It's on the list of things to do:p

Apart from sweating and toiling getting things ready for you lot at Commerfest I actually had some time to spend on Harvey sorting out a few jobs. The first one was to fit an extension to the air scoop under the rad, I made this out of a piece of 1/16" Oilite jointing I had laying around, it's flexible, strong and weather proof so was ideal for the job. A dead simple fix just four self tappers holding it to the original scoop and the other end butted up to the bottom of the rad so all the scooped-up air would be pushed through the rad. By jove it works[^] After adjusting the carb a 1/4 turn on the mixture screw (it seemed a bit lean) I went for a test run along the local by-pass - about eight miles foot to the floor and the temp stayed down and the lekky fan stayed off. It cut in when I came off the by-pass onto side roads (well it would:I) but the engine runs noticeably cooler. I won't say how far above the legal limit I was travelling but as I have only 3/4 throttle travel I think I could push that a fair bit more.
The rest of the jobs were niceties, the roofrack that came with Harvey was cleaned up (it's stainless so didn't need much[8D]) but unfortunately mild steel ends that fit into the gutters had rotted badly[V] Luckily I had an old roofrack off the Mini and filched the ends off that - they fitted a treat[^]
For Harvey's recent camping trips we have relied on bottled water as I ripped the old underfloor tank out (scabby[xx(]) but now he has a new set up consisting of an external Aquaroll type container with a submersible pump doing the business. This was after I fitted a 'leisure' battery (borrowed off the Mini:I) and re-routed the wiring, originally off the main battery, to a position under the bench behind the drivers seat. I was going to fit a split charger relay but the instructions where vague to say the least - Bernie to the rescue who agreed that the instructions somewhat confusing and took it away to figure out how to fit it - I think it will be a Saturday afternoon job at Commerfest to wire it in:I
Also started to brighten up the roof and upper interior lining - have you tried vinyl silk emulsion for this - it works a treat[^]
Still a few bits and bobs to do before the big day and more to do afterwards but Harvey will be there - warts and all[8D]

See you there

Only until I have time to go and buy a new battery - the same as the main one so I can swap around if needed. Anyway it's about time that piece of Rover rubbish earned it's keep[}:)]

Well done [8D]

Water on tap, thats posh I have to use a bottle cos our water tank is still on the drive. :(

I will remind Bernie about the wiring thingy [^]

I knew he would sort it out[^] Might have trouble getting to the wiring at the services with all the camping gear on board:I
I know, Bernie can hop on board with us and he can do it on the run while you drive Gladys:D

At Commerfest Tim showed me his modified air intake, it was so simple it was brilliant[^] so I decided to have a go myself. After ditching the original deflector I came up with this.

Harvey has developed a double chin:)

I took Harvey for a blast and it seemed to be an improvement but it's difficult to tell with a dodgy temp gauge, but after a hard run then hitting a series of lights and round a bouts the fan cut in, the temp definitely dropped quicker once we were on the move again though - and the fan stayed off[^]
Also started to plumb in a Facet electric fuel pump - more next week:)

Thanks Colin:I
Don't anyone think that this is a cure for overheating because Harvey doesn't overheat, if you have got problems with a standard engine then there is someting else wrong. What I've done is hopefully to improve the airflow through the rad to counteract the loss of the original mechanical fan when pressing on, the test will come on those long motorway climbs. Harvey can hit them in overdrive top no problem but the fan cuts in when the engine is working hard, we'll see if this mod improves things with the ram-air effect:p

I'm sure you will notice the difference! Even with Smurf's standard scoop.....it was quite rusty and manky and I cleaned it up and gave it a good couple of coats of gloss paint and even that made a difference:D

Excellent [8D], it seemed to make sense to me in airflow terms, and my one made a big difference :p coming home tonight at 65-70 it didn,t get out the bottom red zone [:0]

The last few months have been a real shake down for Harvey and slowly I'm ironing out all the little problems that are bound to happen with the number of mods I've done.
Not long after he hit the road the starter began playing up, it was as if the battery was almost dead when the engine was warm. I concluded that the windings were breaking down when hot so I splashed out and got a new hi-torque one off Jules, the difference is amazing - and it sounds great when cranking[8D]. When we were away in Yorkshire the other week one one particular day it was dark raining and the roads were very steep in places so everything was working hard - lights, wipers cab fan and cooling fan, the voltmeter was heading south as the puny little alternator struggled to cope with the load. I decided I need a high output one and after looking around I decided to see what Jules had at RatSport, the very one I was looking for. I've just fitted it and ran the engine with everything electric switched on and the voltmeter dropped a little then stayed steady well into the green.
The overdrive packed up at the weekend but that was soon sorted out - just a blown fuse and now all is fine again - you don't half miss it once you've had it:I
This post isn't meant to be an advert for RatSport and if I was displeased with the service then I would say so - but I'm a happy puppy:) (I'll put the sticker on the windscreen tomorrow Jules;))
