A bit more tin bashing going on, I made the door bottom repair panel

And remembered to drill some drain holes

This little corner brace needed replicating

Before the repair panel was fitted, welded and the edges folded over

I then used the cavity wax lance to flood the inside with epoxy primer to, hopefully, protect it for a few more years.

I think I might chop the nearside door step out tomorrow - just for a change :)

Great work and all the pictures will be good for future reference’s and should help give other owners the confidence to have a go themselves !
 
It can be quite daunting when you see the extent of the rot but you eventually get back to good metal and re-building from there is very pleasing :)

They fitted perfectly and lined it all up nicely. I was messing around with magnets for a while but then spotted the pole :) I used it on the other side but used a huge G clamp to hold it in place, the self tappers were much better. I just hope I don't put an awning up and find a bit missing:eek:
 
After a little break we're back on it.

Still a couple of little holes to address but the panel is generally OK. The eagle eyed among you will have noticed that it's a Dodge panel, it was fitted before I got him about thirty years ago:oops: I also did a repair above the wheel arch but forgot to take any pics - I know unforgivable:rolleyes:
 
Moving on to the side after all repairs completed I started stripping the paint. Notice the line of dents along the bottom where the previous owner fitted a new lower panel and the side warped and buckled :rolleyes:

I found the best way is to daub the paint stripper on and leave it for a few hours covered in plastic sheet (bin bags) then slop another layer on top of what's already there, cover up and leave over night. The next day the paint virtually falls off down to bare metal, it needs a good scrubbing afterwards but it works well.

All stripped including the door frame, dents pulled, sanded, filled, sanded, filled, sanded..........................................................and primed

Then onto the rear panel where I was pleasantly surprised by the lack of rust, just a few bits on the bottom edge that needed treating

I've also bare metalled the cab roof but that still needs a layer of filler around the peak repair, a good sanding then primer. The pop top is in the way of some of the roof but I'll deal with that when it comes off

Edit.
I did actually take the side window out and strip behind it and repair the runners before putting it back in (nowhere to store it)

Next summer, hopefully. Perfect, no chance but as good as I can get it :)
It feels good to finally get round to doing all the bits that have annoyed me for years - there will probably be more:rolleyes: I'm hoping this will be the last big resto I'll do and concentrate on maintenance and enjoying my cars - mmmebby;)
