Hi Chris.

I was just reading back through some of the thread and found this. Sorry i didn't reply earlier. Thanks very much for the offer but we have to go down near to Baldock at some point soon for something else so if it suits Colin and Helen, we'll combine the two.

Hope all is well with the Colonel.

Thanks for all the votes of thanks to me and Baz. Really, it was quite easy to organise as the pub is already there and they deal with the money, and I just lifted the runs from the Imp runs that we do in the September every year - so it wasn't especially difficult - all I need to do is work out my left from right, and maybe look for wider, less steep roads next time. I think you can see the van's steaming quietly in Heidi's photo outside the pub.

However, I need to thank a few people too. Firstly to Telford Bob and Mrs Telford Bob and Louis the yappy dog for letting me use their phone to call out Commer Recovery on Friday, and keeping me company while I waited. Where I broke down I had no coverage (rubbish Iphone). Secondly to my mate Baz for coming out in Peggy and giving me a tow back to the campsite (fortunately only 7 miles). The tow rope wasn’t the longest I have ever seen (thanks Charlie Commer), and with it being tied to the lower suspension arm, I guess I was at most a couple of feet from the back of Peggy, and could only see about a foot of the tow rope (if I was leaning forward). Fun! Luckily, I knew where the pub was so I was ready for the right (or was that left?) turn (especially as Peggy’s right side rear indicator doesn’t work). Has anyone got a photo of us arriving back at the campsite (Bernie, Panky?).

Thirdly, I need to thank Baz again for taking me to Bristol Airport to pick up my partner, who’d flown in from Barcelona for the event. As all I have been talking about for about the last couple of months was Barbara, I think she’d got a little jealous and decided she wanted to see what this camper van thing was all about – and I think she is now converted, even if Babs didn’t move the whole weekend (well, at least her wheels didn’t turn). With hindsight, it was maybe a bit foolhardy to plan to pick her up and drop her off in Bristol over the weekend – but it was that or nothing – and after all the work I have done on Bab’s engine, I wasn’t expecting mechanical issues. Ruth had a great time, and only one person mentioned the war (and I think we got away with it).:D

Fourthly, I’d like to thank all of you who voted me and Babs as best breakdown. Well, it was the only one at the time – although Peggy decided she wanted a piece of the action at the Big Pit.

And lastly, and most importantly of all I’d like to thank the generosity of Bernie and Heidi for kindly taking Ruth back to Bristol Airport on Sunday afternoon when Peggy had decided to throw a wobbly and became unavailable for the return trip. Mike Ockley was going in the right direction, but didn’t have time to go back to the camp to collect Ruth’s things and I would have had to get the train and bus back. It was very much appreciated when you offered to take us there and back, especially by Ruth who was already starting to get a bit worried. I hope that one day I have an opportunity to return your kindness. Thanks also for giving the grumpy AA man a cup of tea and Bacon sandwich, as it cheered him up (the buttie van he usually stops at wasn’t there) and made my long journey home more pleasant – even if he did go via the M42 to get to Tring and talk a load of nonsense. Also a previous PB driver. I think his comment was "you don't so much steer them as aim them in the general direction you want to go!"

Hope to see you all next year.

Andy

Thanks everybody for posting pics and vids. It's nice to see that even though it was a pretty wet weekend at times, you all seem to have had a good time.

Was originally planning to make the trip to meet up with you all (but not taking the Commer across the North Sea this time). Unfortunately, Ebba had concert engagements that weekend it turned out, so my plan didn't work out in the end. We (little Vera and myself) had to stay at home instead, but - as opposed to Wales - the weather over here has been absolutely wonderful the last couple of weeks, so we had a grand time anyway.

Will make it some other time, I'm sure :)

Woohoo the dizzy heights of 55 mph, territory never seen by us in the four years weve owned him! the good thing is that was achieved with out really pushing him and road noise at a level where i could talk to and hear lauren in the passenger seat, going to weston was a little louder and i think we may even have reached warp speed 65![8D]:D cheers Gary, ps sorry for scenic route at ross!![)]

Dont try and lead me astray....i know the way myself!!

By eck, that tow rope looks longer than I can remember. Shame I was concentrating and missed Heidi falling over the fence. ;-)

I tried Mark but Heidi beat me to it;) I did feel a bit bloated after the Saturday session though:I

The locals are very friendly but tend to peck your toes if you get to close.

IMAG0101.jpg
[/IMG]

It was very wet on friday evening and many gathered under the shelter of our awning, it got a bit full so a certain bit of ingenuity was required to keep out of the rain when all the brollies were taken:D

IMAG0107.jpg
[/IMG]

Saturday night was even busier and the next morning we counted ten chairs left under our shelter - it's only 8X6 so you can imagine it was a bit snug, the unlucky ones were sat under the parts of the old canvas that unfortunately leaked a bit - but that didn't dampen the spirits and we had a great time[^]
We stayed on over Monday night with Bernie and Heidi who had to leave on Tuesday morning to go off and earn a living. We left The Rising Sun at the same time as them and set off for a campsite that Nancy had told us about, about seven miles away up a narrow and twisty back road we found it - but it was full[V] so the back up plan was activated and we returned to the Rising Sun and stayed another night.

We waited and waited but no one came back[8)]

IMAGE_107.jpg

We got a bit scared as it looked like aliens had landed[:0]

IMAGE_114.jpg
[/IMG]

We experimented with the layout of the bed and found that we actually had one bigger than a king size[:0]

Six foot wide and over seven foot long - a bit of a ridge where the front bench meets the rear section but for all you six foot sixers out there, with a little bit of adjustment you can sleep in comfort[^]

IMAG0176.jpg

On Wednesday we decided to head for the west coast and set off in blazing sunshine, the route would take us through Builth Wells and eventually end up in Aberystwyth, after a wrong turn we ended up going through Llandrindod Wells but it was worth the extra few miles as we passed by the old Rootes garage that is now a second hand shop - the names of the various marques are still there on the facade of the building - Humber, Singer, Hillman, Commer but not a classic in site, we couldn't stop for a photo oportunity as the traffic is pretty heavy in that part of town so we had to move on[V]
We passed through Aberystwyth and headed up the coast in search of a campsite and when grabbing a quick top up with petrol I asked the guy if he knew of any and on his advise we found a C&C club site just before Machynlleth on the A487. It was pleasant enough but not too good to tempt us to stay more than the one night, Barb did rustle up a camping corned beef hash though which was an excellent change from BBQ'd grub:p.

We had always wanted to camp at Shell Island so that was our next port of call, Harvey laid some rubber along the A493 through Aberdyfi,Tywyn and Fairbourne - what a road that is, highly recommended to the Imp and Mini owners but Harvey enjoyed it too[8D]. The roads became a little tamer and our speeds increased as we pressed on through Barmouth and on up the A496. An old stop off point of ours was Maes Artro - a craft village that occupied an old army base in Llanbedr, just before the Shell Island turn off, so it was decided to call in and have a spot of lunch before we crossed the causeway. Unfortunately it has now been turned into the trendy Maes Apartements so lunch had to wait[V] We booked in at the Shell Island reception, £12.50 for the night was reasonable and we could pitch up wherever we wanted. It was very windy so we found a sheltered spot and set up camp - vans and campers need to have a tent for sleeping purposes so we put up the awning and chucked a cushion in there;)

[/IMG]

It got a bit overcast and rainy the next day:I

IMAG0196.jpg
[/IMG]

After a restless night (sounded like a fox was nosing through the bin bag) it was time to pack up and head for home[V] We made good time and arrived back at ours around 3 o'clock, we stopped off for a cuppa and a comfort break at a pull-in near Bala where Barb snapped this
I wonder what lays beyond this little door[}:)]

IMAG0203.jpg
[/IMG]

A huge thanks to Barry and Andy for setting the scene for a brilliant week for us and for every one else who mushed up the ground in the awning - just sorry we couldn't get round to spending more time with every one else but there's always next time[^]

A few more pics of the weekend to finish off

Harvey and Gladys are officially an item:)
When we got back from th Big Pit run there was a guy from Oxford Diecast who had been waiting all day, he took loads of pictures of Gladys, and when they went on there mercy mission to Bristol airport, spent well over an hour and a half measuring every inch of Harvey, and taking even more pics, with a view to producing a series of models of our vans (when I say ours I don't just mean H&G) - the result will be Harvey and Glady's love child[^]
