Aluminium petrol tanks??

In years to come, and Kermit has gone through a colour change, someone will drop the tank to fit a hydrogen cell pack and wonder why[8D]

How refreshing

Hi Jackie here (KKK) 'Colin' - having had the van laid up for almost 1 year being prettied we find we may have the problem of peeling in the tank, not 100% certain but had a few fuel issues this last 3 weeks. How much are the tanks? Will they fit a Highwayman, built 71 registered 73? If ordering how long to completion? Many thanx, Jackie, Colin an 'Colin'KKK :):)quote:

Hi Jackie :) Tanks are 185 pounds all in, with all stainless bolts and clips and posted. Normally take a week or two depending on how busy i am. I do need to you to send me your old sender unit as an exchange, but that can be after you,ve swapped the tanks over, that way i can use it in the next persons tank. And yes it will fit your highwayman :)

Hi Tim, Yes please, I'm fed up with FAFFing (Farting About Flushing Fuel) I'd rather just FAF (Fit And Forget). Daisy is out of the water at the mo' thanks to Mr (Mrs??) Rootes fabulous lacquer idea, so I think I need some of your ali lovliness. You have mail!
Cheers, Martin.

Just fitted the alloy tank.
Put in 5 litres of fuel, tankmeter reads 1/2 full. Put in 20 litres, tank meter still reads 1/2 full....any one any ideas?
Tankmeter was working perfectly with the old tank. The alloy one came with a new already bolted in sender unit.

David, it's possible that it's stuck and may free up with some driving.
If you can check the sender with a test meter between the terminal and the body it should read about 20 ohms when full and 260 when empty.
Also make sure it has a good earth as the stainless bolts increase resistance. :)

I also want to make a few things clear regarding these tanks.

They need a good earth from the sender to the chassis in order for the sender to work properly.
They are left with a small amount of dye-pen inside in order to locate leaks in the fuel system when fitted, as it's very easy to spot them, unlike pure petrol. This is perfectly harmless and will not affect anything.
The fuel feed is no longer threaded and takes a push on hose, this means changing your fuel pipe from the pump to the tank, as it's 40 odd years old and probably full of snakeskin it's advisable anyway.
It's also very helpful to have old senders in exchange, that way i can recycle them and keep the costs down for everyone :)

I will look into the earthing problem when the weather gets better, they are indeed perfect tanks! Happy to have ditched the old one which was blocking up my fuelline all the time. Looking at alloy tanks for a while these ones offer really good value for money. I ordered my fuel hose (between filler and tank) from Demon Tweeks. Also replaced the original hose to the fuel pump for a cunifer one.
