hi all sorry but i have no idea how to navigate a forum. There is a pb camper 1972 for sale i'm really interested in but i know v littel about them. Are they high maintenance? My car history is disastrous so any info greatly appreciated. Thanks dave

You seem to have dropped in on the wrong section but not to worry we'll forgive you. Have you got any more details on the camper you have seen - if you can let us know how to find it we can give you a better idea of what you are getting in to. To answer you other question yes, like ant other old car, they can be high maintenance but if you get a good one then routine servicing could get you bye for a few years - it's just the routine is a bit more involved than modern cars but it's simple stuff most people could do at home.

Hi thanks for the reply. I'm a computer idiot and have never joined forums as i just get lost etc. At the mo thats all i know at the moment. Its tvw115k if you lot know it. I have (hopefully) just sold my gurgel x12. I do like things a bit qwerky And i can find it in a car park lol
 
Did a quick Google search and found it. looks very tidy:cool: - but that was six years ago.

Never heard of a Gurgel before so I Googled that too, interesting vehicles - there cant be many of them in the UK:)
 
Wow as rare as can be, must have been a wrench parting with it. But if it goes to funding a nice Commer then I think you will find it's worth it:)
The van you're looking at is an Auto-Sleeper - the best conversion you can get in my opinion. But I would say that as we've got one;)
 
It is a bit. I actually owned it 10 yrs ago. And got carried away and bought it back for silly money. Not the chassis has rust so not spending more on it and cutting my losses. Hence the disastrous car history Lol. Never even knew about commers till last week. Fingers crossed. Is there anything i need to look out for when viewing?
 
Mechanical stuff is fairly easy to find and pretty robust so don't let a tired engine or gearbox put you off - the real problem (as with and older vehicle) is rust. It can be anywhere particularly around the lower panels (inside and out), floors over the box sections, cab floor, spring hangers, inner and outer door steps, gutters and make sure you have a good look under the peak above the windscreen - we have a saying on here 'Don't look up' that refers to the mess you might find under there. There should be a nice seem where the screen surround and the inner roof section meets so study it carefully as it is an awkward repair.
All this sounds dreadful but there are plenty of other vehicles that suffer far worse and we are blessed with a panel guru that produces all the repair sections you should need - by hand. Martin Maltas is his name and I can say from experience the panels fit perfectly. Go for the best possible body work you can and don't be distracted by all the nice nic-nacs that make the interior so appealing - just make sure it's solid and not full of filler unless you enjoy welding;)

Cool very informative thank you. Hopefuly a view tomorrow. I will let you know on out come. Noticed on dvla that mot runs out end june so will ask it's moted before sale.
 
Looks nice but the door bottoms, lower side panels, rear corners and lower rears should have flutes all the way along like the front valance so make sure they are not filled in and hiding rust. It could be that flat panels have been welded in but make sure before you hand over the cash.
 
Hi. Thanks, i will have a check. Thanks for the pic. I couldn't figure out how to reply on that. I think the reason for drivers door rust is the seal has shrunk back on front corner of corner window (?) leaving a big gap so it probably filled with water
 
Sounds like the quarter light seal, they are available from a guy in Australia but quite expensive.
 
Yes quarter light. Bother lol but i will need it. I looked at pics, cos I couldn't remember but there are no creases along any of the panels inc doors
 
You need to check them very carefully, it may be that they were repaired a while ago with flat plate before we had proper replacements from Martin Maltas, but have a real good look for filler.
 
It may have been. Death in family means they are now selling. The father may have put it on market. I went with my neighbour and it turned out he had know them for years. That may have eased the sale.
