Aaaargh! Help or sympathy needed!

So, I drove Frodo back to the barn on Friday, and everything was good, but I thought the engine sounded a bit "sucky" when you depressed the accelerator. On Saturday, a check showed that the tube from the carb to the vacuum advance had melted, so I stuck a new tube on. Frodo sounded great for about 2 minutes and then developed a splutter and kept stalling.

I had a play around with various things - checked for snakeskin, twisted the distributor to adjust the timing, put my hand over the air intake to clear any blockages etc - but I couldn't get rid of it. Driving him around the farm, there was no power, spluttering, stalling, and NOW white smoke is appearing in the exhaust...

Anyone got any ideas? After all we have been through, I thought we would now be ok, but the Gods of Commering have not chosen to smile on us [xx(]

Sympathy sympathy sympathy[V]
White smoke, could be running super lean caused by a manifold gasket - or a sticking valve[B)]

White 'smoke' is usually steam meaning possible H/G.........................sympathy if it is.

I guess the first thing is to do a compression test and go from there, hopefully all will be well and you will find that the inlet manifold gasket is goosed. But doing the head gasket isn't too much of a job - no worse than dropping the gearbox to do the clutch:I

OK!

Well we're back from a lovely holiday, and just about to head to Halfords to buy a compression tester....
So what should this tell me?
I assume if all cylinders are ok, then its not the HG, but otherwise it is likely to be.
Any hints or tips guys? Thanks!

Stick it in the plug hole, and crank it over(with full throttle) until the tester reads its max, should be around 120 psi on all cylinders.
Take the rotor arm out or disconnect the coil when you do it ;)
Make a note of all the readings and post the results :)

All spark plugs were oily, but the plug on no 1 had water on it, there's Mayo under the rocker cover, but no oil in the rad.
Head gasket then?
