I just bought the second one...eek! I am a touch excited but was hoping that someone might be able to give me an idea if £900 is a good deal on this?? Also it needs some welding work doing underneath at the front to pass its MOT, apparently its only a small area but was wondering if anyone had had any similar work done and could give me an estimation on cost?? I'm not in the mechanical know on this sort of thing!!! Cheers

Hi Tara,

Welcome to the forum, love the van - seems more unusual than the other highwayman conversions as has smaller windows - looks lovely inside with the timber panelling:).

Can't give you an idea of price of work as it would depend on who's doing the welding. When you mention underneath needing doing, does it look like structural chassis type stuff, or is it mostly body panels that are rusty? the fact that MOT test said it was a small area sounds promising so hopefully won't be too bad and listing says chassis good so fingers crossed:)

If you can get some photos organised of rusty bits, it might help the welders among us to give you an idea of what's involved.

Congrats on the purchase of the ebay Commer! You have bought a very rare conversion, it is a Commer 'Dandy' built by Dandy Caravans. Only ever seen two in the past 20 years. Good luck with the restoration:)
 
That is a nice looking conversion [^] Lucky girl, sorry can't recommend any welders but it will be worth doing for sure. I like it a lot :)

WOW - Thanks guys, I've gone all gushy! I think the welding needed is just body work!Its not in my hands yet so I'll ask the very obliging seller to take some pics and see if that helps! Its looking like a garage local to him is going to do the work to pass its MOT...I'm a little worried about how much they're going to quote me though! I'll keep you updated and thanks for all the support and amazing knowledge - I had no idea it was so unusual, I just fell in love with it when I saw it!

Ouch! I just gon an insurance quote from Norwich Union for my new van which really hurt - in the region of £3000, fully comp - anyone got any recommendations of good insurance companies for camper vans?? I was told that insurnace for this beaut would be cheap...don't know if that was a wild idea!!?

dont know if its any help but got my insurance,from budget retail part of Swinton Insurance £207 fully comp with no no claims bonus,as its used on other vehicles,£41 deposit and £18.77 a month for 10 months bargain i thought,mind you thats for a 1979 dodge motor home and its not classic insurance, plus i am a bit of an old codger,budget phone number is 08450131624 must be worth a try good luck Ian

try ringing carol nash insurance, they seem to be the cheapest ive ever used. i got my triumph 2000 insured the other day with them, fully comp plus window screen insurance and break down recovery included here and abroad,im limited to 5000 miles a year in it but it cost me £115.oo for the year.;):p
 
Thats shocking Tara! I recommend Co-op Insurance (CIS), deffo cheapest i have found, - I got my vw camper insured with them, 1 year no claim, for 300 quid! and i'm a 22 year old fella. Also insured as second driver on VW T25 syncro for about 100 quid. cant say fairer than that i reckon.
 
Oooo, seems like being 23 is stacking a whole lot of bad odds against me! [V] Thanks for these recommendations though, I tried Budget - wouldn't do any driver under 25!! But I'll take a look into the others! Anyone know of any insurance companies good and firendly for the under 25's?? ;)

Try 'Adrian Flux', their policy for cherished vehicles is pretty good, even insured my son's VW camper (sorry for using swear words!!!), and he is only 18! contact details are; www.adrianflux.co.uk or speak to a human on 0877 772233. A lot of insurance companies dealing with classic vehicles will not touch anyone under 25, so search search search:)
