'A taste of honey'

If you picture a typical tapered ram pipe viewed side on- draw a horizontal line through the centre- tilt the top half up at 7* then the same with the bottom. you then have 14* included angle or taper ;)
The engine might respond to your mods really well, its a gamble :)

Cheers Tim, that confirms my assumption much more concisely and I suppose the SU'ed Holbay engine might not be perfect in the end but still gotta be much better than the standard iron lump ;)

BTW : I've just had word from the Tor Cars register that there were only ever 6 Hi-Tors ever converted by Tor Cars - I knew ours was a rare one but didn't realise quite how rare [:0]

So with our 'Honey', the scrapped one we salvaged the roof from, the Tor Cars brochure one and another feature in Motor Caravan magazine that's 4 out of the 6 known to me.

Really kicking myself for not taking the full interior from the scrapped on at the time, would have been ideal for our restoration - even as templates. Oh well, just didn't have the space to store nor confirmed plans for restoration but new the roof was just too good to miss.

Does that include the one at my place [?]

Hi Martin, if you mean Dave's beauty then no as the quoted 6 only refers specifically to Hi-Tors

Dave's Commer is also a Tor Cars conversion but a 'Sun Tor Major' which has the same layout as our 'Hi-Tor' but with a pop-up roof rather than our high roof.

It was Dave who put me onto Jim at the Tor Cars register, something I'd been meaning to follow up myself. It transpires that Jim is not only the guy who runs it but who also saved our Honey from the scrapper and then ran her for a couple of years himself, refitting an AutoSleeper based interior to the Tor Cars layout. So a big Commer-ndation is due to him [8D]

We've had Honey for over 2 years now, the previous owner I believe similarly and what with Jim's tenure this must add up to around 7 years ago she was saved from the scrapper. Although a lot of work is being done to her now, with just some minor TLC she would have gone on for a few more still in a pretty original state - perhaps making 10 years post 'rescue'. Just goes highlights what a crime scrapping her would've been.

Paul,

Worth looking at Dave Vizards book "Tuning the A series engine". There's a whole section on carbs and inlet manifolds which is generic really, lots of info backed up by flow bench testing about manifold lengths etc. Highly recommended.

If I told you I was a pathological liar, would you believe me?
Peggy's got an MOT !!! (not a lie)

I kept it simple Scott :D
Paul, stick with the Holbay as its a much better starting point, its main problem is the cam isn,t suited to lugging a commer around. something else might be available or you could get it re-profiled, wider lobe centres would help as would less duration. failing that some anti-reversion steps in the ports and on the valves will help stop charge contamination which is the main cause of low down lumpiness.
As Baz says Vizard books are worth reading as are prof G.P Blair,s.
but there is no need to take it to the Nth here, what you need is torque rather than big bhp, torque is a product of mass airflow and cylinder trapping efficieny. I did a post a while back about brake mean effective pressure (a pressure rise/time thing) which is related to torque, which showed why commers were so slooooooow.
stick with it but be prepared to mess around dialling it in ;)

Thanks for the advice and support Tim, really appreciated. I just need to find that dial on the engine you mention [)]

Following up on my other post re. Rootes colours, I've done some rather crude editing using samples of the April Yellow and Polar White - contrast is all a bit wrong with the original pic but provides the general idea.

If nothing else this exercise has convinced me that with high top roof having the colour just below the windows suits the van best

Woolfy will be calling you later this afternoon to catch up, love to see more pics of Honey' - if you can email them across I'll post them up.

Gladys was definately an inspiration to us and also Simon & Natalie's Autosleeper

Strange, Simon's also commented that yellow wouldn't have been his choice either. Maybe us having a bright yellow Triumph Stag for 6 years has affected our eyesight, as we're loving the retro yellow thing !

[?] In a dilema now,
Gladys was white when she was born, but looks great in yellow
We just haven't got a clue what to do!! :(

I think all the converters bought them in white from the factory and then added the tone-tone colour later.

We decided against keeping the all white look to look more period, rather then risk blending in with the modern 'white van man'.

I know what you mean maybe we should keep her retro.
Got a couple of months to make up our minds, and no doubt we will change it a few times :) :)

BLOCK BUSTER :)

Go with your original plan, it's what you wanted from the start and you'll be sorry if you change it.

Blend in with moderns - I don't think so, if you don't mind me saying:I
