    Pootle getting hot and bothered

Hmm, unfortunate I didn't replace all the core plugs when I rebuilt the engine as I could easily have cleaned out the block then. Stupid mistake I fear.... Is is feasible to remove a plug or two to try to clear out the cy4 silt with the engine in place? Replacing core plugs in situ might also be...

    Pootle getting hot and bothered

Hi Adam. I removed the little radiator blocking the grill and haven't refitted it yet. I suspect it was doing more harm than good where it was and just fitted in the cab heater loop anyway. Will remove the rad and take it for a re-core later in the week and progress from there.

    Pootle getting hot and bothered

Hello all. So the fettling progresses slowly on Pootle and we are now looking to improve cooling as she is running a bit hot. I have flushed out the system with Wynn's rad-flush but to be honest it didn't do too much and I think we really need to have the radiator re-cored to do the job...

    Overdrive gearbox for Pootle?

So new Revotec fan has arrived but before fitting I thought, I'll flush cooling system, then run some coolant cleaner through, then fit the fan..... Easy! Eerm.... So disconnect feed to dashboard rad and connect hose in order to flush the dash and series connected radiators through..... No...

    Overdrive gearbox for Pootle?

Hello again. OK so I've done a few short runs around town to bed the engine in and have spent some time farting around with temperature sensors so I can get an idea if the engine is running too hot. I now have an accurate temp meter checked against an accurate thermocouple so I dare drive it...

Commer engine and parts free to good home (or bad even)...

Hi Chamba. To be honest I'd be happy to see the parts go to anyone who might have a use for them. If you can come along you can take whatever bits you feel you can use/store/sell. We are near the M25/A3 junction in Cobham KT11 2QH. Tel. 01372 824911. Cheers Tony

Commer engine and parts free to good home (or bad even)...

Hi. As some will have seen I have replaced Pootle's engine with a rebuilt Alpine lump so now we have to get rid of the old one. It was working fine and started easily but was a bit smoky which is why I replaced it with more horses. I have the engine, starter, manifolds, carb all free to anyone...

    Hello from Western Canada!

Welcome Thing. We have owned Pootle (a "Tourstar" I think) for almost a year now and you will find lots of help on this site when you get stuck! I am just finishing up an engine replacement on our bus and it has been an 'experience' taking a rusty old Alpine engine from the edge of death to a...

    Overdrive gearbox for Pootle?

Yep, hopefully once things calm down again perhaps Commer-fest might happen and we can make a trip back to the frozen north with Pootle - I grew up near Castleford so know the northern wilds very well! Cheers Tony

    Overdrive gearbox for Pootle?

Hello all. So the Alpine engine is now running well and I'm sorting out fairly minor stuff before I refit the seats and start some local runs to bed the engine in. I made up a very 'steam punk' gantry for the throttle cable to the Strombergs (silver soldered brass and stainless-steel jobbie)...

    Overdrive gearbox for Pootle?

Well the great moment arrived and after a bit of delay getting petrol through to twin Strombergs the new motor sprang to life perfectly and was idling nicely after a couple of minutes. Oil pressure around 30psi on fast idle and no water or oil leaks to be seen. All a pleasant surprise really...

    Overdrive gearbox for Pootle?

Thanks for input as always guys. I can sort out rads and cooling later and will fit a decent electric fan once it's running. At the moment I fear I'm procrastinating and focussing on bits of nothing rather than connecting the engine up and giving it a try.... What do I do if it doesn't work...

    Aluminium petrol tanks??

Hope we are still on the list? I have fettled Pootle's tank with brass patches silver soldered over the holes and there is now almost as much brass as steel. Also lined it with Por15 but it needs replacing really.... Tony

    Overdrive gearbox for Pootle?

Well it's getting scarily close to trying to fire the beast up..... Whilst considering and searching for exhaust ideas I found that there is a Sunbeam Alpine supplier in Shepperton which is about 5 miles from me so I went over there this afternoon and bought An alpine downpipe and Y joiner to...

    Overdrive gearbox for Pootle?

Hello all OK so after a bit of engine hokey-kokey because the sump on the Alpine engine won’t fit over the steering linkage (“you put your engine in, you pull your engine out, in, out, swap the sumps about…)… Pootle now has a new engine in place As is often the case with big-jobs, putting...

    Overdrive gearbox for Pootle?

Hello again Well after due consideration I have fitted a new pre-engage starter from Wosp which is a bit pricey but is a nice bit of kit and spins the engine over well. Oil pressure on starter is 30psi and all cylinders give 12Bar compression so all looking good. New crankshaft pulley fitted and...

    Overdrive gearbox for Pootle?

So here we have the engine just awaiting a few new final stainless bolts.... Because rebuilding motorbike engines is more my background and putting this into Pootle is going to be the real challenge, I would like to 'prove' it as far as possible before fitting. I can check the compression...

    Need crankshaft pulley

Does anyone have a crankshaft pulley to fit Pootle's newly rebuilt replacement engine (Alpine 1725)?
