The easy way to looking like "as found" is to leave the paintwork as you found it. If you must spray it because of repairs, I reckon to do as decent a job as you can, enjoy it shiny, then use the van often, and the patina will return soon enough. I'm amazed at the chips and scuffs I've picked up...

"Check your hoses folks" I'll second that. All petrol engined classic vehicle owners should change their fuel hoses to SAE J30 type R9 immediately if they haven't done it already, even if their fuel hoses look OK from the outside. The old types have a life of only a year or so on the new E10...

Beryl got back on the road this afternoon with the new head gasket and injection timing slightly retarded from what it was before. Must say it sounds better (not as harsh). Head retorqued too. Good to go. Just as well: We need it for next weekend. :)

I'm sure they're right. It's a delicate balancing act between early timing which causes detonation with that very crisp knocky/dieselly sound and late timing with more smoke. The difference is only a couple of mm at the timing marks. There is a (relatively) sweet spot but it's not that simple to...
