Commer catering van

Hi,

I'm thinking of buying a commer van converted to a catering van and after some advice please! Would you recommend it for someone who doesn't know much about cars let alone classic ones?? I'm a little concerned that if something goes wrong it might be difficult to get hold of parts for it? I'm thinking of trading 3-5 times a week so would it be robust enough for regular trips? Mileage is currently at 48000. Thanks in advance :)

That van looks like the perfect fit for a catering van, and it looks to be in good condition, but there is something odd going on with the peak above the windscreen, and it depends on what kind of distance you are thinking of covering. They a not fast, they are noisy, they can rust with the best of them and pretty thirsty on fuel so you might find your profits are going on actually getting to the venues. They can be reliable or a pain in the rear so unless you're willing to learn basic maintenance or know of someone who is willing to help then I would think hard about buying any old vehicle. The good news is that spares are plentiful, with a few suppliers out there, and not that expensive, service items are very cheap and easy to fit.
After saying all that I would like to welcome you along to our friendly forum and if you do decide to buy then advice is always available on here, I think between us we've probably solved most of the issues that go with running an old Commer. Good luck :)

Hi, Panky, jimberlake, S0updragon, thank you for your warm welcome and all the useful info! I never even heard of this manufacturer until now but they make very cute cars, aren't they :D I'm thinking of doing 20miles round trip few times a week and possibly 100miles some weekends...would it be too costly fuel wise?? Below is the link on ebay. Could you have a look at it and let me know what you think?? Also, I would like it in white so do you have any idea how much would wrapping cost??

20 miles is ok but 100miles you could find it needing work or tweaks, very difficult to say.
My auntie runs an HY van for catering and gave up, bought a trailer and tows it once it’s a trip
outside of the city.
You’d be looking around the low 20’s on fuel for that I’d say on average

Thanks for those very useful comments :D I think I'd better do more research before I decide which catering van/trailer to buy o_O

Have a lovely weekend ;)

I can do 80 miles on a tank and you need to consider fuel additives. I do love my camper and I would consider an old vehicle for work but I’m a little gardener and if it didn’t start I’d cut the grass another day and my furthest customer is 7miles away. If I had a job where I had to be somewhere far at a set time I’m not sure. Local cafe has old Citroen cafe vans and they trailer them to events. Mind you it’s always great seeing vintage work vans doing what they’re made for.

80 miles on a tank, that's terrible o_O
PJL with his seven litre V8 on a standard sized tank would be disapointed with that:eek:

Technically it takes it down to a 1/4 and then it’s 25l to fill and easy to work out additive. I’ve never actually seen how far he’ll go on a full tank.

Might be my maths :) - The Weber conversion bolts straight on and improved power and mpg I think. I went SU before this one came out
Jon does the Weber kits
