    Paint jobs

The easy way to looking like "as found" is to leave the paintwork as you found it. If you must spray it because of repairs, I reckon to do as decent a job as you can, enjoy it shiny, then use the van often, and the patina will return soon enough. I'm amazed at the chips and scuffs I've picked up...

    Lilith the V8 racing Spacevan

Ouch! Really glad it wasn't more serious. Loads of videos on YouTube of (mainly American) automatics running in circles out of control.

Drove Beryl up to the Forest of Dean for the long weekend to meet the families at a campsite. Quite a bit of white smoke with a stone cold engine on startup but no smoke once on the road at all . Got stuck on the M5 for 3 1/2 hours  due to that horrible truck collision ( we had everyone's...

    Well That Was Unexpected

"Check your hoses folks" I'll second that. All petrol engined classic vehicle owners should change their fuel hoses to SAE J30 type R9 immediately if they haven't done it already, even if their fuel hoses look OK from the outside. The old types have a life of only a year or so on the new E10...

Beryl got back on the road this afternoon with the new head gasket and injection timing slightly retarded from what it was before. Must say it sounds better (not as harsh). Head retorqued too. Good to go. Just as well: We need it for next weekend. :)

I'm sure they're right. It's a delicate balancing act between early timing which causes detonation with that very crisp knocky/dieselly sound and late timing with more smoke. The difference is only a couple of mm at the timing marks. There is a (relatively) sweet spot but it's not that simple to...

    Out and About

Indeed, several, and if we'd waited much longer while The AA demoted our case 3 times because we had the sense to pull of the dual carriageway into a safe industrial estate road we might have kipped down for the night. Hot tip: If you must break down do it in a really dangerous spot for quick...

    Bumbling round Sri Lanka

Wonderful Jim. We loved India (Christmas 2018), partly for some of the ancient modes of transport they still keep going. I had a go at driving a Tuk-Tuk. Probably not strictly legal, but great fun in city traffic.

Soooooo............ Today I crack tested the head. I blanked off the thermostat housing, and the heater connections with a loop of pipe. Then I trigged it level and upside down.................. ...........and filled it with water with a smidge of washing up liquid to find any cracks...
