Manifold Leak

Latest , Gertrude needs all the oil changed and few other little thing looked at so have taken it to a mechanic I know who has a lift and service garage , I am getting an electric petrol pump fitted and the brakes serviced as when I had a puncture and changed wheel for spare a couple of weeks ago , I removed the drum and found oil in there . He suggested fitting electronic ignition and I'm not sure , what's the general feeling on this !? go or no go ? Your experience is usually very helpful and much appreciated ! Electronic ignition is good thing but not essential if the system is running OK. I've got Accuspark distributers and coils on Harvey the Auto-Sleeper and Ted the Minor traveller as I needed new distributers for them anyway. I didn't realise when I first got Bonnie that she had an old Luminition system fitted and I've never had the cap of since.
The Accuspark/Powerspark ones do have issues sometimes and I've had a couple of modules fail over the years so I carry the old points dizzy with me just in case.
There are more expensive systems out there but around £90 for an Accuspark complete electronic distributer and solid state coil is fine for what I need.

Hello Panky , thanks , been mulling it around my empty head and think maybe I will as it has been standing sometimes for months without attention apart from occasional charging of the battery !

There is nothing wrong with the mechanical fuel pumps fitted to Commers and other Rootes engines. Working properly they provide more than enough fuel. It’s handy to have a primer lever to preprime the carb if you have a low battery. Some have them and some don’t. They also need the diaphragm changing if not done for while as ethanol is not good for the older layered ones. You just need to be careful putting it back in to make sure the operating lever is over the camshaft lobe that drives it. Video of the performance of a mechanical pump from Paul Marshall.

Re points: I prefer traditional points. They are not hard to set up and only need adjustment every couple of thousand miles and they very rarely go wrong. Electronic points either work or they don’t. The danger is they break down with no notice leaving you stranded. Carry spare mechanical points is the answer if you go down this route.

Good luck.

Thanks JJ , I have replaced the diaphragm and still takes ages to start even though engine is zooming round but think I will still fit the electric pump but leave the electronic ignition for now ! I'm used to points on bikes and rarely had problems apart from new condenser needed or a bit of a clean . Thanks all ! Ken
