thought this might be worth explaining 
As we all know, the inlet/exhaust manifolds are bolted together. This is done to put some (understatement of the century[:0]) heat into the inlet manifold to aid fuel vapourisation and help even out mixture distribution. Unfortunately this only pays off when the engine is cold, after about 7-10 miles it is excessive heat and lowers charge density.We all know cold air contains more oxygen than hot air, which is why engines make more power in the cold weather
Mini,s have the same set-up as Commers [B)]
This is a dyno sheet for a 1275gt showing the power with and without the manifolds seperated. The difference is clear, about 3 bhp at the top end. But of more use is the extra torque all the way through the power curve
Luckily for us there is a solution [^] as the two manifolds can be seperated no matter what carb is used. All it takes is some heavy grinding to get rid of the flange on the bottom of the inlet, grinding down the mating flange on the top of the exhaust, and welding a plate into the hole
