Time for the next instalment...
'seams like a good idea'

i started to derust the seamed areas on the back panels of the van today by running the grinder up and down them to clear them of rust as much as i can without going through the hassle of removing the panels completely.in some areas i've had to cut out bits of the panels on the seams because the rust had gone too far. after i was satisfied that i'd cleaned out as much rust as possible i remembered an old trick that i had used a few years back on a different project and it seamed a good idea to try it on the commer,i bet you're wondering what it is now aren't you?

Plenty to keep you going there Mr Woolf!...worth all the pain though for a lot more 'pleasure'.I de-seamed a VW some years ago, took forever as i would cut out 12 inches and then seam weld it back together, then repeat along the length of the car.Looked bang on though!!..Hardest part was above the doors as removing the guttering left a gap, which i made up with new metal.
Should look the Biz on your van if you decide to...:D

i bet your all wondering what the answer is to the question above arent you.can anyone guess what the red stuff is that ive put into the seams after id ground them out,? il give you a clue builders use it on building sites.ive used it before and it worked a treat and stopped the rust from weeping out of the seams:p:) for donkeys ages
 
good to hear from you paul where you been hiding lately, i know what you mean about the seams there quite hard to do because the rust has had long enough time to spread out of the seam and onto the surrounding panels,which means ive had to cut about an inch or two off of the bottoms and tops of some of the panels to eliminate the rust. are you interested in coming over to my place on saturday for a mini meet up and a day of welding, some of the others said they might come.bacon sarness all round and cups of tea.:p:);)

whatever it is I hope you can paint over it!!I think it might be evo stick door & frame sealant because it is 30% stronger & more flexible than traditional silicone.waterproof,overpaintable uv/fade resistant & it's available in brown !
 
no your all wrong, belive it or not its pink grip the stuff like grip fill, ive used it before and yes you can paint over it,but it also sticks like **** to a blanket and sets rock hard aswell.:p
 
Hi Woolfy, sorry i cant make this weekend, ive had a last minute festival booking, so ill be travelling down to Cirencester today for the weekend.
Sounds like youll have some good hands to help you anyway this weekend.

its been a while since i last looked at this thread and have moved on a little bit more with the van, but not much more i might add. i will take a few pics tomorrow and show you my new front valence ect. watch this space.:p;)
 
all will be revealed tomorrow evening after ive taken a few pics and sent them to panky of course to post for me.i have a new front valance now and both of the front floor pans are in place, i have re welded and attached the rear spring hanger, and have also corrected the mistake i made earlier on in the year with the rear inner cill not quite being set in the right place.:p;)
 
when i look at that rear spring hanger on the first page and see how rusty it looks it makes me cringe. but wait till you see the new one in place.:p[:0]
 
let me know when you have an axle, and we will sort out the 5 link, if thats still the plan ;)
