Woodburner?

Used to have one in my Walk Thru when i first bought it, really kept the vsn warm, but can be quite messy aswell as taking up a bit of room (depending on how much you use it...).
In the end I took it out and installed a diesel fuelled water heater by Webasto, which works like a boiler (and also warms your engine up).

Nice Site.. I would like to make
a woodburner for the Commer coaster that i will one day
restore, But its got a canvas roof with a solid top !!!
I may hve to devise a method of fitting the flue ??

Sorry I don't have much experience of camper vans so if you'd be kind enough to explain, why not just heat it off the gas? I means its readily available at garages and takes up less space than lots of wood or a second diesel tank surely?
 
only thing with using gas is the water that's created, causing lots of condensation.

at least with a wood burner, diesel water heater or a blown air heater you're using relatively dry air.
 
A wood burner for an overnight stop would probably be a pain but for extended stays and maybe a bit of 'wild' camping what could be nicer than a real fire. Would need to be creative very careful with the installation though, especially on a petrol van [:0]

Would a chimney or what be used? We had a Leyland Sherpa campervan but come to think of it I don't recall a chimney or anything for the gas heater...it didn't work anyway so we never really looked at it. You'd definitely need a chimney for a wood burner right?

If you got a wood burner with a back boiler, you could build the worlds first steam powered commer Jules!!! Probably go faster mind :(
 
I don't think you will have any problem with condensation, as they knock out so much heat you will probably need all the windows and doors open! We had a small Heron stove on our 58 foot long boat and had to have windows open.

I would be a bit cautious of the home-made gas bottle stoves in an enclosed area. How well do they seal? Carbon monoxide kills [xx(]

I like the idea of a steam powered Commer. :D
 
I've got my Corgi Contructors set. Two Commer chassis and six bodies! :D

I've been told I can have a Commer, just as soon as I get rid of all my other cars. [V] Youngest son turns 17 in May, so will probably be adding to the collection, rather than reducing it! [:0]
