Won't start

I know this was a daft thing to do but started up my van a couple of weeks ago, having being sat for 2 or 3 years, without flushing out the tank. Started and ran fine but tried again back today and it won't start. I guess I've pulled some muck through from tank but where should I start looking? Have fuel at the carb and will almost fire but not quite. Tried redex through air inlet but no joy. Any suggestions? Thanks
 
Sounds like you've pulled the dreaded snakeskin through from the tank[xx(] Have a look in the fuel pump and filter first and clear out any gunk, but it sounds like you need to clear the jets in the carb and fuel lines as well:I Try fitting an extra filter in the line before you try firing it up again.

Thanks Panky. Extra filter is a good idea as quite often left stood for a while, will try the pump this morning.
 
My van had stood for almost 8 months without being started until recently. I'm not saying that this method is right but i too had a bit of difficulty starting it and presumed a blocked jet or something. Put my hand over the top of the carb and turned it over. It almost sucks your hand into the carb but it draws the petrol through and 'BOSH' away it went ;) it's worth a try...And then fit a filter if it does the job!
 
That's a good way to pull the petrol through on a 'dry' engine that's been stood for a while[^]. By completely choking the engine you suck the fuel through very quickly, but you might pull even more snake skin through as well:I

Well spotted Panky ;) i realised this. I have a new shiny Tim Tank so had no danger of that happening. Thankyou for correcting me.
 
Finally got chance to clean out fuel pump and carb today but still no joy. Bit of muck in the filter but nothing too bad. Seem to have quite a weak spark. Any ideas on where to look next? thanks
 
The points could have corroded a little, scrape a bit of folded emery paper between them and see what happens. While you're there have a look at the dizzy cap contacts and clean them up. If all else fails it could be the coil:I
