With November fast approaching we're looking at options for storing our Commer out of the elements, so far I've only found caravan storage options which just stick them out in a field :(

I'm worried that otherwise our Hi Tor won't take too long before it begins to resemble the one Damien dragged back from Birkenhead (much to the annoyance of VOSA!).

Suggestions gratefully received as to where to look in general or for more specific options in the Norwich area (or 40 miles or so).

Hello there.

Having been through this proper a few weeks back, I would advise you to look up indoors caravan storage firms/farms on google or similar. In my experience, if you search for motorhome, the prices will be stiffer. But I may be wrong.. ;)

Anyway, Norfolk etc. seems to be a relatively poorly covered area when it comes to indoors storage. Outdoors storage is easy to find, but you really don't want that ! There seem to be more indoors storage places further up the country, which is kind of unfair [V]

Found one near Lincoln (where they charge about the same as what I'm paying in Lancashire) which probably is too far away for you.

But try to spend some time looking up various camping and caravan sites, and you should find a few places. The challenge is finding one which is realtively near you, and doesn't cost an arm and a leg :)

I would recommend you follow the farm storage route around Norwich. There are many farmers with sound buildings which are of little agricultural use with modern machinery and modern grain storage regulations and are not worthy of the investment required for conversion to a lettable business use. The problem is locating them. It may be worth contacting one of the estate agents who deal with agricultural land such as Savills, or maybe the National Farmers Union who may be willing to help by making contact with their members. You should have a local office for Norfolk.

Other options could include some of the large landowning estates such as Holkham or the National Trust. These generally have estate managers you could contact.

If you are prepared to come as far south as Suffolk, I might be able to put out some feelers for you. I am aware of a couple of farm buildings south of Bury St Edmunds which have planning permission for the storage of classic vehicles, although I am not sure whether they are still in use for such.

or you could forget all of those worrys and buy one of my soon to be coming brand new camper van protective winter covers they are water proof and i will be able to make them to suit any commer campervan [:0]:p;):D[?]
 
Hi Woolfy, you mean even a Hi-Tor ???

Anyway, thanks for all your suggestions folks - managed to find this storage which is not too far from us for £60 a month, so not cheap.

Unfortunately our Hi-Tor is too tall to get in their remaining basic 'dry and airy' barn which was all we're really after for just £20 a month

Still looking for a cheaper alternative though but the £60 option gets us out of a muddle in a hurry.

Just SORNED our Hi-Tor today :(, they're gonna collect the Commer from us for £30, which works out a fair price - as with our Nov SORN refund and petrol saving costs totally £20ish will cost us just £10.

I've now got a few months to plan course of our action for 2009 improvements from the wish list :
- Source a jack
- Fit our rebuilt alloy headed engine
- Source/fit an overdrive gearbox
- LPG conversion to dual fuel
- Peak repairs / roof swap
- Make cab watertight and get Woolfy's carpets
etc !!!

That looks like a useful facility. I have forwarded the details to a colleague of mine who lives in Norwich and was quoted £7 a week by Norwich council for a not very secure lock up garage (both adjacent garages had been broken into). Being an insectiverous vehicle from the dark side, it should fit in the basic barn. ;)
