What's the verdict? Experience and advice welcome - upgrade or not, I'm currently running Windows 7.
 
Hi Panky. Did 2 machines just after it came out. 3 year plus old Windows 7 desktop took hours to upgrade but went fine and starts up quicker. Modern windows 8.1 laptop upgraded faster but runs a little slower than it did before the upgrade. Windows 10 interface is good, if you play DVDs a lot or use media centre you might need to install extra software. Overall I'd say go for it!
 
I think there's a DVD player in the Microsoft App store. You lose Windows Media Centre as part of the upgrade. Another (I prefer) option for playing DVDs is VLC.
 
Thanks porf. I guess the new App will be suitable for CD's too, is VLC any better than Media Centre for anything apart from playing discs?
 
CD support is built into Windows 10, you won't need another application for that.
I believe the Microsoft DVD player is free if the version your upgrading from has Media Centre, that'll cover you for DVD playing, I just happen to like VLC as it'll handle a lot more formats.
It's really the rest of the Media Centre functionality you're losing - TV, streaming etc. If you don't need that I wouldn't worry. I you need it there's plenty of alternatives available - http://www.makeuseof.com/tag/5-alternatives-windows-media-center-windows-10/

Before the upgrade it'll check your hardware is suitable so it should only upgrade if everything's acceptable
You get 30 days after upgrading in which you can roll-back the upgrade if you find it problematic
I'd always recommend backing up anything important before upgrading - I used a USB plug in hard drive to take a copy of the whole machine as these have become a lot cheaper now. If you've less stuff you might get away with a USB memory stick.
 
Before changing to 10 check online for reports relating to the 'hidden' small print relating to your agreeing to MS having access to everything on your computer.

Make sure you're happy with what you'll be signing up for.
 
Yes I've heard that, I'm not having any problems with W7 so very reluctant to change. I believe it will soon become an automatic down load that you specifically have to stop rather than a requested one - that alone gets my back up:mad:
When it is time to change I think I might get a MAC and stick with 7 for now.
 
Ah, but then you'll want an "I-" everything to be compatible with the MAC and end up selling your soul to Apple........................................
 
You promted me to upgrade my Surface (1st Generation) which was running slow on 8.1 and now is zipping along! I quite like a lot of the improvements they have made from 8 to 10 - it should be slightly more gentle transition for the 7 users too
