Hi, my engine seems to be getting extremely hot after a very short while where the manifold bolts on and there also seems to be some whitish smoke coming from around here too. Can anyone shed some light on this please as im not to clued up but im quite handy and im learning as im going. Colud it be a gasket of somesort or maybe something more sinister? Also i have just noticed that the large air pipe going to the air box mounted on the carburettor has cracked and is pretty useless so i shall replace it but could this have anything to do with it getting so hot so quickly?

Is the smoke visible with the engine running or as the engine stops, If the gasket has gone big time you could be seeing fuel vapour seeping out but only if the engine has stopped - this could also be the cause of it running hot, a very lean mixture as air is sucked in.

Hi Panky, i was sat in it in my driveway with the engine runing and after about 3-5 minutes a faint continuous amount of smoke started wafting around the middle bit of the manifold thats bolts onto the engine block, about the amount a joss stick gives off and when i stoped the engine alot more puffed up and then dissapered after about 5 secs! Really unsure what is causeing it but after the 3 minutes of engine running that side of the engine case was blister on the finger hot!
 
It sure sounds like the manifold gasket has gone - not too bad a job (as long as the exhaust bolts come off OK:I) I would change it and see how you get on - can't think of any where else smoke would be coming from - unless the rocker cover gasket is leaking and dribbling oil onto the manifold.

Is there a strong smell of petrol? It could be petrol dripping out of the inlet manifold drain onto the exhaust.

Cheers Panky i shall check the rocker cover gasket tomororow, although i wasn't aware of any oil dribling down and ill change the manifold gasket. Do you think this would also explain why it is getting so hot around there, or is this normal anyway after such a short time? It really was BAKING!!
 
it sounds like a manifold gasket, but check for smoke from the exhaust as it could also be a head gasket [xx(]

hey! i was aware of some smoke coming from the exhaust exit last time i used it when i started it up. it cleared away after a short while and someone who was there said it was condensation although im not sure i believed him. If this is a head gasket problem is this the end of the line or can it be replaced?
 
If hot exhaust gases are leaking around the area it will get hot. Thinking about Tim's comment on the head gasket - are you losing any water - or oil into the water (milky crud inside the rocker cover or unexplained rise in sump level [:0]) head gasket could be a possibility.

Don't worry head gasket can be replaced by any competent mechanical DIY'er :)

if it has white smoke from the exhaust and/or bubbles in the radiator when running or blowing water out the overflow its head gasket.
try pulling the plugs if all 4 are white then its probably the manifold. or if any of them look rusty or odd then h/gasket :)

Phew!!! Hopefully its not that but im unsure about it losing water or oil getting inside, ill check all that tomorow. This place is invaluable. Cheers!
 
I just changed the exhaust manifold gasket and its pretty straight forward. Its a bit of a pain getting the middle two nuts off so - top tip, chisel them off and replace them with new ones. It saves a lot of swearing!

Head gasket should only be a couple of hours work. Its not the huge downer people seem to think it is, and no way does it mean the end of life for an engine. All head gaskets go eventually, its just a case of when not if.
