Whirring noise??

Any of you guys got any idea of what this could mean??

Wilma is fine when moving in gear, however, when ticking over there is a whirring noise (fairly loud) coming from somewhere..? maybe gearbox or rear transimssion, it goes as the clutch is lifted and you pull away.

Any ideas anyone??

Could be that but the release bearing is usually a solid carbon one, maybe the spigot bearing (£3 from Speedies). Harvey makes a bit of a row but it's still there until 4th is selected, the MOT man diagnosed it as the 1st motion shaft bearings.

Ray, try and pinpoint where the noise is coming from, release bearing is a good suspect ;)

Oh good...?? - sounds like I can live with it for a while if it is the release bearing?? What does it look like anyway?? - the small round thing?? Assume it's a clutch off job?

Not clutch out but gearbox I'm afraid mate:( depending how old your clutch is, it may be worth changing it for a new one. martin does a 3 part clutch kit which includes the bearing, and he is CHEAPER than speedies at £60
Speedies want £60 plus £20 deposit plus postage plus the return postage....hope this helps:D

I only had the gear box off a few months ago, release bearing looked fine... along with the clutch plate, as they have both only done about 4k miles??

Unless it's something else... worse???

Will have a better look in the morning.

Checked the fluids... engine oil, gearbox and transmission, all ok. Haven't started her up yet.. will bleed clutch and start her up later.

Can't understand it??
 
Whirring noise still there on and off...??

Gears a bit eratic to select, particularly 2nd..?? any ideas?? could be worn/loose linkages?? - nursed her down to Mevagissey and back, but need to sort it out obviously.

What should i check first?

When you say 'looked fine'???

In my opinion I would almost certainly say that this is giving you da jip!! do you have the modern carbon fibre type like in bazzateer's pics or the oldy worldy spinney bearing type???
As a 'quick' chheck crawl underneath and give it a good healthy squirt with a spray grease or WD40 and see if it will temp be quiet... if it does then BINGO!!:D





 
If you do have the old roller bearing type then quite possibly the bearing are running dry....

Do you have a splash guard fitted between the bell housing and gearbox??...kind of a good idea but equally a bloody good damp and road dirt trap.....

Col. reminds me of kentuky fried chicken...as in Col. Sanders original fried recipe:p:p

it's wierd but I have no probs with mates calling me Col but if ever my Mum called me Col, I used to pick her up on it and say 'You christened me Colin...use it'

(perhaps I see you as a father figure!!!!!!!! LOLOLOL):D:D
