What Spares to carry - just in case...

I'm having a clear out of the van - 2 full bottles of brandy are better than 4 half full ones etc. Trying to make a little more space.

The original owner of my van bravely used it to go to Italy every summer and wisely carried quite a stash of spares to keep her going (have his orignal packing list somewhere). Currently in my 'goes back in the van' pile I have:

Alternator
Dizzy - with cap, rotor and leads
Set of sparkplugs
Fuel pump
Length of fuel pipe
Thermostat
Thermostat housing
Radiator top and bottom hoses
Hose repair tape
Clutch slave - plus a repair kit
Clutch Master
Brake Master
Full set of front brake cylinders - plus repair kits
Full set of rear brake cylinders - plus repair kits
Brake flex hose x1
Front wheel bearings (1 side)
Full gasket set
instant gasket
250ml brake fluid
WD40
Epoxy putty
Epoxy resin
Exhaust tape
Exhaust brackets
Various nuts and bolts
Various crimps, fuses and wire
Some bulbs

I've taken out the spare water pump (never known one to completely fail?) and spare carb (is that too paranoid?)

I guess i should find a spare coil and maybe the original metal fan should the electric one fail, also want to a spare fan belt that is less than 30 years old...

What else (in addition to brandy) should i have stashed to avoid the shame of being brough home by the AA on a Sunday?

That's pretty comprehensive but if you're carrying spare brake and clutch cylinders you might as well put a bottle of brake fluid in too. A big bottle of Radweld is always a good thing to carry as well.
You've got more spares in your van than I've got in the shed;)

Just a thought - are you running Strombergs? if so a couple of diaphragms would be useful.

just got the one stromberg still - next step is the quad carbs, but not quite picked up the courage yet.

spare carb perhaps should go back in.

Blimey, you're more support vehicle than camper;)
Trouble is if you take something out then sod's law says that's what will fail next time out:(

Blimey. If I packed all that I would need to pack a mechanic as well lol. AA card and a massive ‘cracked glass’ sticker for the windscreen. Job done lol

Cable ties and jubilee clips are a must. So are dispose able nail files, perfect for cleaning up contacts etc, plus if you are stranded because somebody used metric instead of imperial bolts, you can have nice nails

AA man told me a tall tale of a darksider who had driven to pick up a new engine, broken down seized at the services so he fitted his new engine for him; all about reducing the use of the beavertails apparently!

Once swopped an engine out of one beetle into another in a car park in hamburg... No idea who owned the car we swopped it out of
