What Commer should I go for?

I am going to get a commer hopefully and I was wondering as to which of the commer campers I should go for?

Depends whether you want a coachbuilt or van conversion. Highwayman is the most common coachbuilt and autosleeper most common van conversion. There are a number of van conversions about and it is nice to see something other than an autosleeper occasionally :I

Coachbuilts are a little thin on the ground, but when they do come up are usually a bit cheaper (and slower) :I

Then you have to decide if you want PA, PB or Spacevan. PA's are very scarce, PB's the most popular and most are tax free, Spacevans all taxed and not as pretty.

What ever you get you will be welcomed, but please don't go to the dark side, like someone else [}:)]
 
hi ollie :) darkside means one of those other inferior type of camper vans from germany [xx(](starts with a v and ends in a w)

my view is that when you are a member of the darkside, people will admire and think you are a free spirit and a surf dude, but when you own a commer, they know that you are a clever free spirit who has there own mind and doesnt follow the darkside crowd, they smile in admiration they are amazed at the useful space within a commer like a wardrobe that will hang more than one robe in it, like a bed that if you are over 5'10" your feet dont hang out the end. you will probably be the only commer owner in your area which means that you cannot be invisible everyone knows you. A common quote from someone on the street is "ohh a VW my cousin/bloke at work has got one of them" Never with a commer :D also that one on ebay looks great but the interior looks a little hand painted. but could be nice

I think I will go with a highwayman as I actually prefer the looks:D.
I'm always looking out for a resto job as I'm always up for a challenge;)

Evening all....

First time post, and to be honest, wasnt really aware of these tasty campers until browsing ebay looking for a cheap V...W (can i say that on here??

But, when i seen one on ebay i was intrigued .... ( and by sheer coincidence its the one that martin maltas has provided link for above)

so much more character than the darkside!!

it just so happens that i just bought it tonight... on a whim and a prayer, i havent even seen it in the flesh... mistake?? probably...:I

so, i know i rushed in, but me and the missus agreed it could be a decent wee buy and went for it.... totally blind, not even knowing much about what type it was etc....

dont mind getting hands dirty and see it as a project

can anyone shed any light on it for us?? what model, interior type etc... total amateur sorry.
 
Well done and welcome to the mad house (traditional greeting on here:D) Looks a little rough round the edges but very unusual and worth buying. I am definitely no expert but I suspect it may be a home conversion or maybe the product of a one man band. I've not seen side windows or roof like that on a Commer before and the interior looks pretty unique but that doesn't detract from the fact it looks like a very usable, practical camper, there must be acres of space inside with the roof up. Again welcome and we look forward to progress and lots of pics [^] You've got yourself something a bit different even for a Commer [8D]

I was thinking it may be a little different from normal,

My bodywork knowledge and skills are limited, but theres only one way to learn, I'm more prone to engine work, although skills there too may be limited, but nuts and bolts are after all, still nuts and bolts wherever you are and i work with plenty of them offshore :)

are there any books or other sources of information you can recommend? I've been busy scouring this forum, for a start.

Its excellent,a great community by the sounds of things and I look forward to getting up to my elbows with you all.
 
Welcome and good decision! I don't think you will regret the purchase at that price; it seems the only way is up!
