What's the price of a top end Commer???

Hi All!

Ok i know how long is a piece of string, but I'm trying to work out what top end Commers go for?

What has prompted the question is how much money i invest in my '67 Wanderer. I want to try to get it to 'showroom' quality and I've been to a coachwork down in Brighton to get a quote for sorting out the rust and getting a respray. The rust isn't too bad (???) but it is prevalent in all of the seams, especially the gutter and i would rather get it sorted properly than a short term fix. The place is Brunswick coachworks and they have a very good reputation and I was quoted that it would be not be more than 4k. The guy seems reliable enough and he mentioned if it didn't take as many hours then the price will come down. He also mentioned he would offer some guarantee that the rust wouldn't come back so quickly, but we didn't talk about what period of time. He also mentioned that he was sure i could get this work done else where for a lot less but presumed on these cheaper quotes that it would be a short term fix. I know 4k is a lot, a lot of money, but if it worth it then I'll do it.

I know owning a Commer is a labour of love, but will my investment increase the price of my commer respectively?? Whats prices do top end Commers go for? I thought a while back i saw a couple on sale for 8k and 10k, but i may be wrong.

Also if people think this quote is high for sorting the rust and respray can anyone recommend somewhere else in and around sussex that i can get this done??

I spent around £3700 for mine, I've spent quite a lot on it since. Is it show room standard, probably not but I'm really pleased with it.i would say if you were to spend £4000 on a re spray plus what you've already spent you might struggle to get that back.

There have been a few sold recently for 10/11k region, still cheap in my opinion and I think they are still going up.
4k for a top quality bare metal respray is spot on. Once rust has started you can never stop it completely. I had the detector van acid dipped and phosphor coated, I have seen a couple of minor blemishes on that.
Doing a full restoration on a van will not return your money , but if you intend keeping it, it will repay you in enjoyment.

Very few non mainstream classics will give much of a return on restoration costs. Long term maybe but then you've got to keep it in good condition all that time.

Four grand sounds pretty good to me.

I stopped keeping an eye on costs after a while! I do know that the paint for body and wheels alone cost the best part of 1k, so 4k all done sounds very reasonable.
Like Martin says, the van repays in smiles!! Lol :D
 
Wow, cheers everyone for your great replies! I love the Commer van fan community! I am not planning on selling the van but i was just trying to find a comforting thought in spending 4k. And if i thought it would nicely add to the overall value then parting with 4k it doesn't seem too painful. I paid £4200 at purchase and it was in good condition but slowly the rust has started to creep in and i would hate for it to get any worst. But very nicely put Martin, it will repay me in enjoyment...and smiles!! Thinking about how nice the van will look now already has put a smile on my face! Glad to know that the 4k is a reasonable price and I'm not being over charged. There's a availability in the coachworks at the end of May so I'm going to go for it!! I'll keep everyone posted. Now to decide whether to stick to the original Cotswold biege or go for something different...

I was quoted £6000 when I was considering having mine resprayed. In the end I decided to paint it myself with rustoleum. In your case £4000 will be a good investment for your van. Have you got any pics?

I've got mine with agreed value of £7000 and the insurance company seemed happy with that if that is of any help. With regards to the respray I did mine back in the early eighties with a tiny compressor with no tank, the van was dry stored from 1991 to 2013 when we put it back on the road, a good clean and polish and it still looks good,so the planned complete respray has been put on hold while we enjoy the van. I have now got a HVLP set up and have resprayed our Reliant Kitten and Austin Metro with it. I used cellulose on these and with time and effort achieved quite a good finish , a lot cheaper and you still have it for future use. However you proceed enjoy the Commer.
 
Hey Panky, yeah the interior never got quite finished, it's going back into the workshop end of April so will post some pics then. I definitely need to build up my posts!! Cheers Malcolmmer for your info and value at the insurance company. Glad that your commer has come out of hibernation!
