Some of the leaves act as spacers so you could take a couple of the shorter ones out, but won't give much of a drop. I remember Will doing this many years ago. Don't be tempted to re-profile them though as flattening them will also increase the length so you could end up with the shackle end hitting the box section. Martin does some specials which have been re-profiled and shortened to get round this.
You'll need a ball joint cracker for the lever arms, they are not under any spring pressure so no nasty surprises there. But make sure you drain the old oil out (it will stink like fish), flush with oil and re-fill with some SAE 40 or SAE 50 for that extra but of stiffness.
