Welding...and what am I doing wrong?

Managed to improve laying welds on angle iron so thought I'd have a go on some sheet steel, I turned the power down and burnt a hole straight away.....Cazz is just taking a photo so be back with that shortly to give you all a good laugh lol

the trick with thin stuff is ither move faster or do it in a series of short bursts. overlapping joined up tacks ;)

Here is a picture of the welders

don,t do any pipework colin [:0]:D
firstly get some more sheet steel as that bit is galvanized and will give of arsenic fumes when welded, its horrible stuff [xx(]
start afresh and keep going to get some heat into the metal and it will penetrate better. mig is always cold to start with unless you pre-heat the job ;)

Thanks Tim:D

All those temptations,,,,,, i haven't eaten choccy for years so have no recolection of what it tastes like? Love sweeties though. Crisps would be difficult to have readily on the shelf though i must admit.

Get yourself some clean mild steel to practice on, anything galvanised is a pain with a mig, the zinc vaporizes and the resultant gas prevents the weld "sticking" (I bet you got a few holes in your sleeves as the balls of molten steel rolled straight off that zinc plate:D) mig's like clean, paint free and unplated steel!

Having been there myself, I would suggest turning the power and wire feed right down. Then increase the wire feed step by step until it's not "popping" anymore. do a couple of lines, and check your penetration - is the weld going right through. Once you are comfortable with that, do the same on the next power setting. You will find the right setting for the metal that way, and the wire speed that goes with it. And just keep practising! I have only just really got a handle on our welder, and then I used one at work and it was totally different, but after a while you just get a feel for the right settings.

And just keep practising!

Tigger, Panky, Chasbaps, Tim....

Thanks guys, all points noted and thats what I love about this forum!

Will get some new, clean metal asap!

At least I got past the initial fear factor and just can't wait to get going....blooming work and waterpumps stopping me playing lol

good luck - well if I can do it (of sorts:I) you can. Feel seems to come with doing - found it deceiving practising on bits of metal on their own as behave differently to areas with a whole(ish) van attached acting as a heatsink. Each repair responds in its' own way depending on thicknesses of what's being welded to what where kinda thing... does this make sense?

Hearing how it's welding seems useful - nothing better than getting that magic fizz [^]

Keep up the good works - you ain't seeing photos of my first attempts ;):D
