Commerjule's Holbay conversion is a point in case.
The Morris minor scene is has similar issues, marina engine swaps (equivalient to the rapier/alpine swap), then there is the Fiat Twink and Rover K Series etc.
It all comes down to what you're happy with and what you want to spend.
Like I say I like to keep it retro, just pepped up a little. If I want fuel economy and comfort, I'll use the Modern car.

p.s. someone mentioned something about water pumps... I they fail catastrophically when they go and you will need gaskets and sealant to replace it. Oh and the bolts can easily shear off too..
