Vauxhall cavalier engine swap

Hi guys, could someone please help me out , im looking to swap my old commer engine with a cavalier engine, need some advice on what would be the best way to go about it , like what size engine would be the least amount of hassle to put in and any other mods i would have to put in because of the engine swap.
I probably wont attempt this myself but having some info to take to the mechanic would be great.

Cheers for any info.

Matt

It has been done very successfuly by Will and Dave Jones, I'll see if I can find the thread. They where 2.0 8v engines I think.

I believe the 1.7td izuzu engine (from cavalier/astra) will squeeze in, then run a rwd box from a carlton or similar. I had been tinkering with the idea myself as its the perfect engine for economy, reliability, enough power (taking into consideration the commers abilities at high speed and rear axle) and its realitively inexpensive

Most vauxhall engines mate up with the Omega boxes which on the manual gives you a hydraulic clutch and the autos give you the ease of not having to modify gear selector linkages. The Omega boxes are a lot more common than Carlton ones now too.

I'd rather have a bottle in front of me than a frontal labottomy!

I think their cooling system needs a little re-working :D

Would this engine be suitable for a commer.

I don't think fitting a diesel lump would be any more difficult than a petrol one, the problems arise when you try and get the sump to clear the cross member and sorting out the gear linkage (making an adaptor plate to fit the Commer gearbox to you chosen engine is an option) - the rest is plumbing and wiring. Engine mounts shouldn't be too difficult As long as there is enough room to physically fit the new engine in then go for it.
Have you seen Jon's thread on fitting a modern Ford oil burner - very interesting[^]

Thats the engine i was talking about! The only other issue i can think of potentially (other than what panky mentioned) will be the turbo as it may be in the way, you may have to either cut away some of the commer, or reposition the turbo, manufacturing a new manifold to suit. Those lumps are quite tuneable too if you want to get some extra ooomph out of

Personally i would go with an auto box if possible, cruise mobile!
